Question K&N Oval Air Filter

My car is restricted for height under the hood. At present I have an oval air filter fitted. This sits right up into the hood scoop.
I believe this filter is a bit restrictive for my engine, and would like to go to a K&N filter element.
The only one I have found is 3" high (element alone) and I need one 21/4" high max.
Can anyone tell me if K&N make such a thing, and if so what is the part number, - I can't find one like it on their website.

My only other option might be to use the Edelbrock triangular thingy, but I prefer the looks of the current oval set up.

Thanks

Wilf

Mr. Wilf

K&N will, for a modest fee, make a custom air filter for you.

Lightbulb I just ordered one for my turnkey

And sent it to Vern at WCC. It is the stock 1 and 13/16 inch height...the part number is:

KAN*(E1960)

The part in the brackets is the most important part. Any local speed shop or good parts store should be able to order it for you.

Oh, the price I paid was $80.00 plus tax, but it is a local discount shop, the retail was over $90.00

Wilf - Is your 3" K&N the drop base type, if its not you can save at least 1" of clearance by using one of these. I have one on my Hi-Tech with a Weiand Stealth intake.

Mr Era237 - (I do believe we might drop the "mr's" these days, unless of course you enjoy a more formal approach to life, whereupon I would be happy to continue as we are?) - thanks for that, I have spoken with K&N, but I suspect that the attitude of K&N Europe may not be as enlightened as that in the USA, unless your name is McLaren. Their last response was to "look on the website".

Back in Black - thanks - I will chase down that part number to see where it leads

Andy - I cannot get even a 2" high 13" dia circular filter under the hood - only the oval one will fit up into the scoop. I did try originally with a dropped base circular filter - no luck. The only K&N oval filter of the right size I have turned up so far was 3" tall - and won't fit!! I calculated the filter area of an 8" dia S&H type filter which might just fit - far too small, even worse than my current one. I have some concerns about the fact that the filter sits right up into the scoop, and hence into the airflow, I understand this may not be optimal, but can do little about it. As things stand, I am limited to a Performer RPM inlet manifold, when really my engine could do with a TorkerII or even better, Vic Jnr.

Thanks all for your input

Wilf

You might try cutting a little less than an inch out of the middle of a 3" filter, and then glue them back together with with pieces of wire spanning the middle for added security. It would be tough, but I would assume it would work.

Default Filter Element

Wilf,

If your air cleaner looks like the attached and you still need an element, send me an e-mail. The K&N for this is quite new.
(The stock one is very restrictive they say - I wouldn't know as, I am finishing my build now).

Wilf old buddy! I will do this for you in the next 12 - 15 hours, I will look up what you need in the K&N catalogue and then call them to see if : A) They can do a custom filter to your specs and B) How much it will cost.

Lightbulb Here's the K & N website !

Wilf,

The filter I bought is THE most common size for the housing we both have.. It is stock height, I had it in my possession, and so it is not a custom make, but standard K & N production. Here is their website, I bet they can sell direct, or they can give you a retailer in the UK or EU that can sell to you direct.

Hope you find one, they are all I would use on a motorcycle or high performance motor of any kind.

Wilf,

E-1960 & E1963 both come up as matches. E-1963 is $64.69 U.S. at summit racing. I do not know the difference between the 2 elements, but will try to find out.

P/N Matching

Eureka!

Motorcraft P/N (stock type element) FA48 cross references
to K&N

E-1960 9.5" wide x 20 13/16" long x 1 3/16" tall

E-1963 9.5" wide x 20 13/16" long x 3" tall

Good luck! I'm ordering one as soon as I find out how much hood clearance I have. (My body is due any week now).

-Steve

Wilf - I called K&N and asked about doing a filter that is :

9.5" wide
20 13/16" long
2 1/4 high

They will be calling me back in the next day or two with a price. They said it would take about two to three weeks to produce.

I will let you know.

Lightbulb Filter element vs housing

The 1960 ELEMENT is 1 and 13/16 inches height

The complete filter ASSEMBLY is 2 and 1/4 high

Hope that clarifies the matter.

The 3 inch element will require a huge or *thru* hood scoop, not something to be done by an amateur. Here is a link to such a professionally done scoop, if anyone wants to see that:

My car will be very much like the pictured one except for color, the hood scoop, and the mags.

Default Thanks

You guys are so helpful that I almost feel guilty! Were it not for the fact that I try to help out lots of folks myself on our UK forum, I would be guilty!! It's quite worrying - someone there has just called me "Wilf the Wise" - ah, you can fool some of the people ec etc.

Thanks guys

Wilf

Default 2 4s and 3 2s

The oval air cleaners originaly from Ford were for the three 2v's and a taller element fot the two 4v's.Back in 69 it was commonm to use the taller element on the tri-power. Now we're talking about little Cobras. I have a EM with the little scoop.I also have a 427 FE w/2x4 tunnel wedge manifold. The current setup is S&H cleaners with the foam and perferated steel trimed and tapered to fit under the hood .They hit the hood front and rear.I,m planning on having the top of the manifold milled to get the height down. I have the K&N elements ,still in box for the S&H's.I still think I'm going to pull a vacum at the cleaners.I'm looking at alternatives like a Turkey pan of pan to get fresh air from the outside,a new hood w/ a larger (non traditional) hood scoop.I have even considered the new F&N dula four setup but it is only rated at 735 cfm.I'll be looking for suggestions as this progresses.

Cool Sounds like a cool project

I am in Lacey, probably not more than 30 to 40 miles from you. So what actual carbs have you decided on? I am a bit confused...maybe you have not decided.

I am under the impression that anything but the stock height ( oval type ) air filter housing, or the equivalent height unit, will require hood alterations. Take a look at the post/link I made earlier in this thread for one way to modify the hood with a *thru* scoop, for a lot more fresh air and a taller area for custom or unusual intakes. Looks great, and I think it will really help carry away some of the engine compartment heat. It also would allow you to see the filter housing and engine torque from the cockpit

Another thing to consider is header wrap or jackets....it helps channel the heat from the headers OUT thru the pipes, instead of letting it radiate into the engine bay. I would love to check out your car, and certainly it will be fun to see it when running.
