Trans/Clutch Difficulties
I was originally having problems mating my trans to the bellhousing. The trans would stop with 3/4" to go. I was told to use an alignment tool, which I did, and it went in a little further. I was able to bring it in the rest of the way by tightening the bolts. It did not take a lot of force, but it would not just slide in. Now, I am having a problem with the clutch. The clutch lever does not appear to be engaging the clutch now that I have the cable installed. I am getting ready to tear it all apart again. Any suggestions of what to look for, and how to make sure that it will be right when I put it all back together again? I have had the engine in and out twice, and I have had a hell of a time mating the trans to the bellhousing. I want to make this the last time.

We need to know what parts you are using, ie trans make, bellhouing type, fork, clutch, ect. Some pictures of the parts laid out would also be helpful.

Had a similar problem installing T-5. The parts all assembled OK during trial assembly, but during final, had to snug trans up with trans bolts. Used alignment tool on clutch into pilot bushing. Concerned something was binding, but everything works fine. Only thought is that the greased pilot bushing had some resistance as the trans input shaft went in. Tight fit.

Like the other post we need more info what type bellhousing , trans , and spacer. My Lakewood bellhousing was dialed in and perminatly set by my machine shop. I belive my spacer is a Mcleod which mates my Tremac to my FE bellhousing. Good luck Olaf

Lakewood says:
Due to the manufacturing process for the bellhousing, the centerline of the bellhousing bore may not be aligned with the centerline of the crank. Lakewood recommends that you check this alignment and make any corrections if necessary. Installing a bellhousing that is not centered with the crank can result in poor shifting, clutch engagement problems, worn pilot bearing, as well as accelerated wear on the transmission bearings and gears.

Try this:
First, put the trans. in fourth gear. Use the alignment tool to locate the clutch plate. Make sure the clutch pedal is hooked up and set correctly. Install the trans. When you get it close (when you start to feel resistance) have somebody push in the clutch pedal and rotate the tail shaft at the same time.
If this does not work, then you have an alignment problem. I live close to you, if you want help, e-mail me and I will be glad to come over.

It seemed to be slightly misaligned. A little manipulating finally got it in. Also, in the end, I needed to tighten down the clutch adjustment further than I had it.
