289 fuel pump eccentric
I was wondering what that thing was for
I was wondering If a guy, or Gal!?, is going to run an electric fuel pump is there a reason to keep him from removing the eccentric cam from the front of the cam gear? I didn't know if it would throw things out of balance or if there was some other reason just to leave it be.
Just an ignorant chevy man

No reason to leave it in if you run EFI and an electric fuel pump. Just block off the fuel pump opening, or use a late EFI 302 timing cover that has no fuel pump opening.
Something else to watch for. Ford played games with bellhousing bolt patterns in '64 and '65 on small blocks. You may need a bellhousing specific to your early block (if you can find one), which may limit your trans choices. Everything from '66 up should interchange.

yes, I have the 5 bolt bellhousing. I have also spoken to a guy who can build me a toploader from 1965 which incorporates both trans bolt patterns which allows me the option to use a later motor if I decide to switch later.
I do need to find a clutch for though...
Thanks for the timing cover tip!

Is it worth the hassle? Use a 302 or 5.0 and it all bolts up. You can even use a late clutch cable. The 289 had a shorter stroke crank, only difference. Even 289 HP heads are no match for todays off the shelf aluminum.
Small blocks then used BW T-10's (sideloader). Small block Cobras used them, Sunbeam Tigers used them, (Griffith used them) and most 4 spd equipped Falcons, Comets, & Mustangs used them. Things like bellhousings, clutches, flywheels, clutch linkages for the OLD oldies might be hard to find.

I got tired of messing with the Borg-Warner T-10! I rebuilt the thing twice to get it from jumping out of second gear on deceleration, only to have it start doing it again, shortly after the last rebuild. This is a common malady of the T-10's. I had David Kee build me a toploader 4-speed and it has been wonderful. However, I must say that if I were doing it again, I would absolutely go with a 5- speed. The highway miles to go anywhere are not much fun in fourth gear!!!

The parts can be a little hard to find at times but with the virtual garage sale "EBAY" & a little digging you can find almost anything at a reasonable price these days!

Guess I was one of the lucky ones. Had a '64, 289, T-10. No trouble with trans. But I did have it to do all over again when putting Cobra together and went with 5 spd T5Z. 2.95 low w/3.55 rear. Swapped .68 od out for .80. 2500RPM=75MPH. Great for highway cruising. Concerned with T5 durability with all the stories I've read. Suppose if I screeched it all the time, I'd break it eventually, but I don't. Nice, smooth, quick shifting sports car trans.
