Carb opinionitis
I'm looking to choose a carbeurator. I'm planning on throwing away my preconceptions and approach this with an open mind. What are your general opinions of the various cabs today?
My considerations are: Edelbrock AFB-style Holley Street Avenger Barry Grant Street Demon Predator Quadrajet My application would be for street use only. A choke is neccessary. I want something dependable and certainly streeable on a mild engine. O.K., you gearheads, let me know what you think. Thanks, JT |
My .02:
Holley. Easier to find parts, easier to tune than the AFB (Edelbrock). The Demon's have a good rep, but I haven't seen one up close and personal, but I know that Barry Grant is a really good carb man--I would trust his work. The Predator: Junk. Hard to tune, hard to find space for and very unreliable. They were the hot new thing at hte tracks a few years ago, and disappeared shortly thereafter, while the Holley's just keep on going. Quadrajet: hard to tune for specific engine choices, more of a production carb--he!!, even GM used Holley's on most of thier real hipo stuff! That should say something! Remember: at Generic Motors, QUANTITY is job one! |
Carb choices

When my engine was being built I asked the builder (RV Engines, Alexander N.Y.) what size Holley carb I should use. He already knew how I planned to use the car so he recomended that I use an Edelbrock 600 CFM. He said it won't produce the power of a comparable Holley but it would be way more reliable and trouble free. He said the Edelbrock can sit for months without being used and then work just fine when called upon. The holley may take some tinkering. It boils down to this: Power = Holley, Tune it and forget about it = Edelbrock. By the way the Edelbrock carb comes with a comprehensive manual that tells you everything you need to tune the carb.:D |
I have a mildly tweeked 351W running a 650 BG Speed Demon. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Runs very strong. Also BG has excellent tech line.
