Question Surge / Expansion tank question again!

I have a '67 Corvette "Harrison" surge tank on it's way to me to use on my "Project GT140" (a Mustang II being re-styled similar to a Daytona Coupe) and have a quick question. The engine is a 2.3 turbo and is already fairly plumbing intensive as I need lines for my heater and also my oil cooler. The high point in the car is now the heater core.

Here's a pic of a similar tank:

I believe Corvettes had the connector at the top plumbed to the radiator and the lower one to the heater.

Here's my question: Can I just cut my heater core feed line and splice in the tank (inlet top and outlet bottom)?

(And yes, the "puke" line below the cap will be connected to a small catch can to protect the neighborhood cats )

Any help is appreciated,

Francis "Turbo II"

Did the MII originally have an expansion tank or just a radiator overflow? With the heater at the highest point in the system, you might be better off with the latter method if you have a way to bleed air off at the heater. You just have to use a radiator cap that allows fluid to be sucked back into the system when it cools.

Well the MII used to have a radiator cap which was the highest point, but since then I've re-located the rad to fit under the new flip front (it's now angled forward like a Daytona Coupe). So I now need a location to fill the cooling system.

The expansion tank will work fine plumbed into a "T" in the heater hose. Mount it as high as possible, and I would drill a small hole at through the top of the thermostat flange so that it bleeds slightly all the time.

Exclamation surge tank

On your surge tank the top tube fitting is the overflow, the next fitting goes to the top of the raditor which you will have to put a outllet on to receive, this is to let air out went filling. The bottom fitting goes to the inlet side of your water pump. The neck of the surgr tank should be the highest point.
Good Luck,
Lee

Turbo II,

When you first started this project, or at least when I first found it, I thought, "this guy is nuts!"

Now, after spending another 45 minutes on your site, I am in awe. It is simply amazing. Wish we were closer, I'd love to make a visit and get some lessons from you.

May I suggest that you get a large penny jar? Save all your unused change, not for the car but for exspenses to make the "Fling" some day!

Keep updating your site please. It really is a fantastic project!

DV:

Thank's for the kind words, coming from you I am extremely flattered. Building this car has truly become a labor of love, I'm having a lot of fun building it and learning a lot of new skills.

I would LOVE to make it the Fling! I was blown away by how well it went last year. Kudos on doing something so impressive and for such a great cause. I start drooling if I see just one Cobra (they're not too common in Alberta) I think I would need medical attention if I saw 300.

Would a lowly Mustang II even be welcome at the Fling?

Kindest,

Francis "Turbo II"
