Replacing Cap Bolts

I want to install the windage tray with a new Canton pan on my 351W FMS crate engine. The windage tray is held by new cap bolts that have a small stud above the bolt head. Can the existing bolts be removed (one side at a time to prevent the cap from moving?) and the new bolts replaced without damage to the bearings? Since I have a lot of room under and around the pan, I hope to complete this change with the engine in the car. The car is an ERA 427SC.

You can certainly replace the bolts one main cap at a time. Just take the bolts out and replace, one main cap at a time. The main caps really should not move.

But do both bolts at once. Loosen each one a bit at a time and then replace with your new units.

As you're installing the windage tray, turn the crank over once and make sure there are no interferences. If something hits the tray, you'll have to shim it with a washer or two between tray and cap. Then, when you install the pan, check it again. The crank scraper on my Canton pan pushed the tray into the crank. Had to clearance the crank scraper with a die grinder for clearance.
