ignition system
I have a 460 stroker motor in my car. The ignition system consists of a Holley distributor #890-410-238-99, Ford Racing Ignition Coil #M-12029-A302 and Ford Racing Ignition Control Unit with rev. limiter #M-12199-C301, plugs are Champion set at a gap of .035.
I have a slight miss at 5000 rpm and I will investigate this. My question is: I would like to replace the Ford Ignition system. What are some of the recommentations of what system to use, like Holley, Acer, MSD, Mallory ect. or stay with the Ford Racing System. Thanks.:) :) :) |
I use the complete Holley anih. system and have been totally satisfied with it. :)

Ignition
The OEM Ford module does not have the ability to support high compression high RPM engines. It was developed to provide a stable maintainence free system for smog era engines. (Lean Mixtures, & eliminated the ignition points and related dwell change.) Go to a MSD, or the re labled (BLUE) Ford Motorsport/Racing (MSD manufactured) or similar type set up that has the ability to switch the current necessary for high output electronic ignition coils. Double check all the primary voltage connections too, as they can be the source of headaches such as this.
Been there done that..............Rick The MSD is the standard for the 9000 RPM NASCAR boys, it will work for us! |
I use all MSD components for my 460. I have not had any problems, other than those cause by user error (sometimes I am not as smart as I think I am). I like it so much that I am converting my other engines to the same type MSD setup.
Good luck. |
Re ignition systems
I am using the Jacob's Pro Street in both of my cars and I really like it and have had good luck with it. I have used the Mallory, the MSD, and Holly and they are all good. I just like the Jacob's best but that is only a personal preferance and not saying it is any better than the others.

Advantages of MSD 6AL over FMS Ignition Box
I have a 351W crate motor with the FMS Ignition Control box and duraspark distributor. The ignition box number is M-12199-c301. It has the blue wire strain relief and has a tach output terminal and RPM limiting socket. It is labled states "made by MSD".
What would be the advantage of switching to the MSD 6AL box? |
