Power to weight ratio?
Heres my question. I'm looking to build a 408 stroker w/aprrox. 525 HP @5,600 & 499 TQ @4,900. (Dyno2000). Ford sells the 514 stroker which advertises 600 HP @6,250 & 590 TQ @ 4,750. The cost for each is almost the same. (I feel I'm getting better parts with the 408) What is the weight differnce between the 351 stroker to the 460 stroker? Would the BB and all its TQ offset the weight difference or is the SB a better choice? Plan on using the Cobra for daily driving and drag racing on the weekends. Not interested in the autocross racing. Thanks for any input. Rodney  |

Sorry, looking for the weight advantage/disadvantage and cost factor associated with building the 408 to buying the factory Ford 514 stroker. Since theres only a 75 HP difference, but tons of TQ (which does the Cobra really need that much TQ)? Isn't it just getting lost in spinning tires? Sorry again guys!! Rodney

Hope my earlier post did not look too smart to you.
This topic rages on the thread Big block vs Small Block, and being one who just made his mind up I can tell you this is your decision.
Just ride in several cars, thats what I did, and it made my mind up for a 418 stroker (556 hp @ 5600 rpm, 500lbs of torque plus from 3500rpm, through 6000).

Eric (Great Asp) is getting his stroker SB soon,...
And in about one month, I will be taking delivery on my 514 SVO with custom Holley EFI
I am sure we both will have a lot to say as cobra newbies with these motors. I think it's mostly a matter of whether you want the massive bottom end torque or not. (although Eric's motor is gonna have a LOT too)
However, that is a wee bit less important with a Superformance than a West Coast Cobra, due to weight factors. Eric has made a fine choice of a powerful, suitable motor, and so have I.

BackinBlack and Jamo, thanks for the reply. But is 600 lbs of TQ too much for a Superformance, or any other Cobra that weights about 2600 (351) 2800 (460) pounds? Well the more I think about it, does 100 lbs of TQ make that much of a difference? Back to Dyno2000 to see where I can place the HP and TQ to best suite my needs (desire more like it) HaHa. But still, does anyone know how much the 351 and the 460 weight? Thanks, Rodney

Well said! You get to a point where you can pick what you like. Not that a 514 would have been bad. Not at all. It was too much for me, and I wanted something "personalized" to me.
But as I have said in the other thread, this is a matter of choice. And there are no bad choices. I had a 385 hp motor in my last SPF, and it was lots of fun. Will I have more fun in my 556 HP? yeah, sure. But the 385 hp will get the job done. You can race it, wax it, drive it. So it's a good engine too!
I want to ride it Steve's West Coast Monster with that 514, to remind me I can still be scared 
GR8RALLY, ride it the cars with the different engines. If you need to get names and times to do it, I can most likely help you. DVSF would be a good time to see and feel all!

How about this...
6 cylinders
274 cubic inches
390 ft/lbs Torque
10.8 in the 1/4 @ 124
0 - 55mph in 1.47 seconds (based on 1.47 60' time.
There are a some V8's that will do better than that but not too many. I mean at the track, not in their owners minds.
Point is that you've got to get the power to the ground or your wasting your time.
Sorry guys but somebody has to stand up for the "unV8 crowd"
