Question The Contemporary

I built Cobras in the 80's with Boarders Motor Cars in San Marcos CA. We built the Contemporary Cobra ( a fine kit!) I have been out of the biz for about 10 years. MY question is What name is Contemporary using now. I heard that it was sold a while back. I am getting to a point where i can build one for myself and would like to build a Contemporary or something comparable. Any help out there? Tom

Contemporary sold out to Burtis several years ago. Burtis quickly ran the company into the ground. What was left was sold off in bits and pieces. I think Factory Five bought the rights to the Daytona Coupe project....help me out here guys.

Hi Tom:

Contemporary went out of business a while ago. One of the better kits, for sure. I thought the frame design went to FFR.

Anyway, I would suggest calling Don Borders at Image Auto 760-200-5882. This would be a good place to get started and catch-up. He has access to Contemporary stuff and builds his own kit, which is similar.

I used to be in bussiness with Don when he had his shop in San Marcos. He is a real piece of work. So, he builds his own car now? Is he still in Palm Springs? I see you are from San Diego? Do you have a contemporary? Thanks for the info.

Bill, I see that you do own a contemporary. Did you build it yourself? Or did Don. When did you build your car? I mostly did the paint and body work when i was with Don. '84-'88.
Your name sounds familure. Talk to you later.

I believe the daytona stuff wasn't sent to FFR. Upstate possibly? I can't remember.

Tom:

I forgot Don used to do business down here in San Marcos. Small world huh, that you used to work with him?

My car was built by Don in 1990. Just got it last week. Give me a call if you want 858-795-3400 (work).

Thomas,

Did you paint this car? DB told me it was his car for awhile.. Sort of a BRG with flake.. it was built in 1988. Don can be found online at www.imageautoworks.com

Michael,
The car i remember Don having built was a green and white one with a 428 CJ. I did most of the bodywork and paint in that time period although i was working on the Japanease account for a while so there was a few that Don and Randy painted. I do not remember a burgandy with flake car. This sure brings back old memories.
Later.
Tom

They have a loyal following but are a far cry from the Contemporary. Check out FFR's website and Cobraforum.I was told by one of the FFR guys they had the Contemporary moulds and a bunch of tooling for the Cobras and will be making a line of parts for them at some time. They also have the 250 moulds which I have seen a body taken from.
Cheers
