Oil capacity heads up
I am about to fill my engine oil in prep for breakin
Can someone tell me what kind of capacity to expect as extra due to the oil filter and remote cooler. I used the AN 10 and in the same lengths as described in Bob Putnams oil cooler line layout.
I have the Milodon FE Cobra style roadrace pan, so I know it is 7 quarts by itself
The reason I ask is that I may not use the stock dipstick and tube thus will have to know what full should be on the new stick.

I bought a Canton pan last week. They suggested filling the block with the recommended pan capacity and give it time to settle. Do not turn it over, as oil will enter the rest of your lines etc. Then re-index your dipstick based upon this new "full level". Once I pulled it out I scribed a lineon the back of my stock dipstick. I then used my Dremel to give it a little more definition. Afterward, I added another 1.5 quarts to fill the rest of the lines, filter etc. and primed the engine through the distributor hole with a priming tool and drill. Then I started the engine and re-checked my level.
-Hope it helps.

Yes Wadesdad, that does help....thanks.
So I know I can goe ahead and add 7 quarts right off the bat for the pan.
1 quart for the new filter.
Lines and cooler are the unknown.
Working on getting the dipstick in at the same time here.

I was wondering the same thing a while ago, and spoke with Earl at Dove's. He said to insert the dipstick in the engine with it upsidedown with the pan off. Stick on the windage tray and mark the stick ~1/2" below the windage tray (above when upside down) this should be the desired level when full. I then add oil to the engine until after it is run (filling all the lines cooler, etc.) until it hits that mark. Takes out the other variables such as oil line length, oil filter capacity, etc.

CCX33911, what oil pan do you have and, exactly how much oil do you have in your engine?.

I have an FE. I have the Canton 7 qt Road Race Pan. I have a custom Cobra like mount for the oil filter that supports a Fram HP-6 style (BIG) filter which I think holds about 2 quarts. My installation is not complete. I have been running the motor on the frame only without oil cooler. And have been using about 9 quarts. I also just purchased a Accusump (the 3 qt high pressure). I am going to mount the body soon, and that will allow me to mount the cooler and Accusump and get the line length, etc finalized. I would guess my total system will be:
Pan 7 qts
Filter 2 qts
Cooler 1 qt
Accusump 3 qts
total ~~ 13 qts
Hope this is a help. Once I have the car on the road I will know precisely how much to put in each time, etc.

Here's a tip from the Milodon site who made my oilpan....
"TO ACHIEVE THE PROPER DIPSTICK READING: Fill the Empty Pan with the Number of Quarts Listed in this Catalog. Listed Capacities Are For the Oil Pan ONLY and DO NOT Include the Filter. Before Starting the Engine, Check the Dipstick and Scribe the New Full Level Where the Oil Mark Is. The Original Full Mark Has No Bearing on Where Your New Milodon Pan Full Level Will Be. "
Ordered the Lokar dipstick and am waitng for that to show up now.

Loaker FE dipstick ??
Hi guys I finally got my dipstick assembly from Lokar today. Had to be made I guess and then shipped to Canada to boot. Not the average item stocked by the Lokar dealer here.
Anyhow, I see the stick itself is marked with a full and empty. Did the lokar guys reference this to the originals?
Is the mark something I can go by and use?
Clois if you are out there did you use a sealer on the tube install?

The Lokar stick did not match my previous stick which I had modified such that the oil level was just below the windage tray. If you have your old stick or know the capacity of your system and can fill it I would doulble check the marks. You can adjust the lenght by taking the rod out with a set screw and cutting and reinserting the rod.
I used RTV sealer around the base when I inserted it into the block (FE).
YMMV

Thanks for the reply G.Gibbs
I do have my old stick for reference and will likely use it to check the new one against
The whole reason I went with the new one was that the original did not want to go back into the hole with the new headers and all. I also wasn't sure in remembering how well seated the original tube was when I yanked it prior to rebuild 2 years ago. Seemed to only go back in about half of the depth looking at the shoulder on the tube??
Lastly try replacing a tube after the motor is back in the car and has headers. Originally i worked it out while on an engine stand with all kinds of room......
Hopefully the lokar fits in nicely

Hi Tim, The Lokar is a little awkward to put in . Easier on a hoist. My stick stops at the end of the tube but with a little fidgeting, it slips in. Much nicer than the stock setup. You must be close to finishing. Mines been in the paint shop for the last month and a half. Hopeful to get it back this week. Regards, Ron.
