Smoke out of breathers
I am getting smoke out of my breathers after my second test fire of my rebuilt engine. Has a hint of fuel smell to it. Is this just the junk that should be run through the PCV system that I have not hooked up yet? Is it just assembly lube burning off? Did not notice this on first fire up.

What kind of fuel pump???
Mechanical or electric ??
Remember even new mechanical fuels pumps can be defective and allow gas into the crankcase.
Cheers,

Do a compression test (engine hot, remove all spark plugs, and hold the throttle open). Sounds like blow by. Maybe the rings have not seated yet.

I am thinking that it could be that the rings have not sealed yet as you said. The engine has only been run for two short runs. Anything that I can do to assist them in sealing?

Do not use synthetic oil!! Did you break in the cam for 20-25 minutes at 2,500 rpm? If not, do this first. If your block was honed with deck plates, the cam break-in procedure should seat the rings by then.

And then hook that PCV up. The pressure in the crankcase has to go someplace.

Jeff,
I am not using synthetic. What weight oil would you recommend for break in? I am using 10w30 right now.
Thanks,
Tom

Re somke through breathers
Tom,
I use Valvoline 20-50 racing oil in both my big block and stroker engines. That is what they used to break the stroker in on the dyno and I have used it in the big block for over 30 years with no problems. I am sure there are other oils just as good but I have just stuck with what has worked for me and the engine builder of the 351 stroker said that is what they used in their race cars. The other guys will also have a lot of good oils that they can tell you about.

10w-30 or straight 30 should be fine. After break-in, you should talk to your machinest to see what type of clearances he set up. Either 10w-40 or 20w-50.

It has a hint of fuel smell? That means there is probubly gas in your oil, change it. If you have lots of air coming out the breathers than you have excessive blowby past your rings. Do a leakdown test to verify. Check your carb float levels to see why your oil smells like gas, one float could be stuck.

Oh Buoy,
Don't start fretting just yet.
A little smoke occurs when the oil splashes off the hot valve train.
Try an oil splash guard below the breathers, Speedway sells them for @ $25.
Solved my problem on this.
