LeMans Gas cap solution

Having read the many threads about the LeMans gas cap or rather the lack of a gas cap, I have found a solution that may work. I visited my local salvage yard today and stumbled on a gas tank nesk that is about 6" long and whose to neck is tappered to snuggly fit inside the cap assembly. The top taper will be bonded into place and it will also fit into the standard LeMans pipe reducer allowing the use of the gas overflow neck nipple. Please don't ask what kind of car it came from because the raw jewel was found along a stack of old heaps. On the way home I bought a locking gas sap from Napa for $8.00 and I think I have solved the need for the old tennis ball under the LeMans gas cap. Hope this idea is helpful. Chuck

Got mine from europaspares.com. It comes with a locking gas cap w/key inside the LeMans cap. Good for keeping fuel in the tank, and foreign material out. Also seals the tank. The cap to tank was done with primarily exhaust tubing, and connected with fuel tank line and hose clamps.

Tip. For added security, drill & tap an 8-32 thread at the cap-baseplate interface. Then install a setscrew so the cap cannot be turned or unscrewed unless you remove the setscrew. You can't even see the setscrew when it's installed.

Thanks for your tip Jack, although I dare say mine probably was alot less costly. At least neither of us have to use the old tennis ball trick.

I use a tennis ball under my cap. I was reading an article in an old Road & Track about Cobras. It was mentioned in the article that drivers would use a tennis ball to prevent spills if the car flipped on the track. Wanting to stay true to form, I immediately went out and bought a sleeve. I got one and the dog got the other two.

You should see the expression on the gas station guy when I pop the lid!!

Superformance starting putting in a locking gas cap insert into their lemans style caps over a year ago. It can be retrofitted into the earlier caps too. This may be a solution for some of you, it may or may not fit all makes of replica lemans caps though.
