Default narrowed 9 inch

Hello everybody. New to the club. Lots of good reading here, great site, sounds like my kind of people. Anybody out there narrow housings? I have a very nice jig I made 15 years ago so I decided to check out the housing on my new cobra project. I'm still sick to my stomach at what I found!
I couldn't even get the jig through the housing it was so crooked.
I,m going to try and straighten it without cutting it apart. Anybody have any input on what an exceptable tolerance would be? I have the know how to start from scratch but it has a lot of brackets (4-link and shocks) welded to it and didn't want to duplicate all that. THANKS, GMAN

Get out the press and torch use the heat sparingly.

Rick, was already on to that this afternoon, broke small press. Was a little to careful with heat. Cut it apart and straightened the whole thing perfect. Best I can figure they narrowed the housing first then had to much heat on the brackets. both tubes where bent the same way out of line with the center section. Lost another weekend on the build. Thanks, Gman

A&C has had problems with their rears. I know they have used several outside fabricators in the past.

I know of two cases with shortened axles that lost their hardness and caused the splines to twist.

Mine had Chinese wheel bearings in it and I powdered one after about 10k of riding. Thankful that it didn't damage anything else.

I know of one case where the weld on the housing (where it was shortened) broke. This person also had one of the twisted axle splines mentioned above. Joe of A&C made good on it and sent, I believe, a new Currie rear housing or axles or both.

Also, A&C chassis and rear tends to have too high a pinion angle, from the few I've seen. I replaced my upper control arms with Metco adjustable ones. Brought the pinion down and the car runs great.

Roscoe, nice to here from you. I've checked out your build site when I searched the forums for A&C. Nice car. You helped me make up my mind on whether to press new bearings on my axles. they didnt put the disc brake spacer on first and I didn't want to cut them. Could you give me more info on the adjustable bars? I'm not real crazy about the pinion angle either. Also they have the shock brackets parallel with the housing face and the steep pinion angle causes the coil overs to rub on thir own bracket Thanks,Gman

Contact Metco,
They made a set for me like the ones at:

http://www.metco-inc.com/caupper.htm

The difference is he made both ends with the large blocks you see in the pic at their site. We had to fit them a bit but they finally went in nicely. You may find another company but I just happened to find Metco.

I'm very pleased with them. Lowers were not changed.

Gman,
One more thing:

I believe Joe at A&C sells an adjustable upper. Give him a call.

Campy,
Don't have build site, not that computer literate. I think you can find Roscoe's on his profile page. Gman
