Speedometer Cable
Hey everyone!
I am trying to figure out where I can find a speedometer cable for my set up...
Stewart Warner (Street 289) Gauges and a Ford C4 Transmisson. The Speedo has a thread on stem and most of the Ford Cables I've seen have a clip - on type.
Is there a ready made cable for this set up, or is this a special order item ?? Thanks.

The early mustangs used the type of cable you are looking for. I would suggest going to your local NAPA store and looking through there United speedometer cable book. I found one the length that I needed with the correct ends in the picture section and had them order it. I think it actually fit a cruise control car and went from the trans to the control box.

Pioneer : CA-3015 about $9.00
I think it's from a 70-ish mustang
If your speedo is reverse sweep, you'll need the 90 degree adapter gearbox as well

Ron,
Pioneer makes the cables (motor mounts and other engine parts).
Take the number to a Carquest, NAPA, Parts Plus or other "real" parts store.
Cheers,

Mr. Fixit,
YOU'RE THE MAN!
The part number was right-on. The cable is even the right length.

While we're on this subject...
I have Smith's gauges with the reverse speedo, so there's a 90-degree gear housing attached to the back of the speedo where the cable attaches (male threads on the gear housing). The tranny is a close-ratio top-loader. Any prospects on where to find the correct cable? Will I need any additional fittings besides the cable itself? Also, how much should I expect to pay for all of it?

The cable I listed above will work with Tremec 3550, tremec TKO, and toploaders. The 90 degree adapter gearbox for reverse sweep speedo's is separate. I don't have that part number, but Stewart Warner makes the good one (about $25). The gear you put on the end is different for Tremecs vs. toploaders. Tremec's have RH pitch, toploaders have LH pitch.

Mr. Fixit:
A little confused.
Will the CA-3015 speedo cable fit a C6 Automatic trans and SW speedometer with the reverse adaptor?

I am pretty sure that cable will fit any Ford tranny that was used in the 60's- 70's. Any reverse sweep speedo needs the gearbox installed at the back of the speedo itself.

Dang, this website is awesome!
I already have the 90-deg gearbox with my gauges. Just needed the cable. I'll run down to NAPA and get one ordered today! Thanks!

I dunno, whoever in your area will sell you SW gauges should have their catalog and be able to get one for you. Then post the part number here for everyone else.

Speedo Cable assembly
Is the Pioneer CA-3015 part the complete cable and cable housing assembly, or just the cable or just the housing? Also does it include the small yoke plate that secures the cable to the tranny tailshaft housing?
Also, when we hear about changing the speedo gear, what gear gets changed? Is it on the end of the speedo cable or within the tailshaft housing?

Complete cable assembly, inner and outer cable with the retainer tab. You still need the gear and the clip that holds the gear in place. and a bolt and washer to hold the retainer tab to the tranny. The gear goes on the end of the cable, retained by a clip.

Tony,
The gear that gets changed out is the one that goes in the side of the transmission. They usually come in different colors eg: YELLOW, GREEN, etc. Some of the speedo shops refer to putting a different color speedo gear that they identify with a particular rearend gear ratio and tire diameter combo. The changes out very easily.
I took my car to a speedo shop and had them provide the right gear with my differential and tire combination. Cost was less than $50 (maybe $25 or$30).

Speedo set up
Thanks Guys,
I just spoke with Bob's Speedos in MI and he's putting together a cable, cable housing & driven gear set up for me. It should be here Monday.
Most of the Pioneer Cables I looked at come with a push on end at the speedo and I'm using a Stewart Warner Speedo that requires a screw on end. As for the gear size, or should I say color, it is purple; a 21 toothed gear.
Thanks for the quick response and help.
Tony
