cobra oil pan?
Where can I find the oil pan with the fins and the word "cobra" on the sides, you know the ones than resemble the valve covers? Are they available for a 351w?

Those cast aluminum COBRA oil pans look so trick, don't they. Problem is, cast aluminum doesn't dent very well. It cracks, or breaks, and when that happens, it doesn't hold oil very well. The bottom of the oil pan sits about 4" off the road surface, and a speed bump taken a little too fast will take it out, not to mention other usual road hazards. Don't think you really want to go there unless this is a show car, and not driven.
Consider the baffled steel oil pans by Canton, Moroso, Milodon, that do what they're designed to do; keep oil fed to the oil pump, even when dented. |

Not necessarily. Here, you'll get a diversity of opinions, and experiences. Pick everybody's brain, then decide what you want to do. Can't say I'm always right, nor can I always recommend the most appropriate approach for your situation.
That being said, once you've decided on what you want to do, and I can help you with the "HOW", particularly if it uses a lot of site space, and wouldn't be particularly beneficial to other builders, please feel free to e-mail me directly.

Oil Pan
Draco,
I bought one of those Cast Aluminium oil pans and was scared to death about hitting something at night (I figured I could dodge it in the day time). Go with the steel oil pan. Armando makes a steel one that can give you a little extra clearence too. The way these things sit so low you need every inch you can get. If you get a crack or a hole in an alum pan your oil will be gone before you know it. The cost will be about the same and you can worry about something else besides all your oil dumping out before you can get the key turned off.

I have to second the other folks. My wife ripped a big hole in my oil pan and now I have a pan from Armondo. Very nice pans and I picked up nearly 2" of clearence. MUCH better deal than you will get from AVAID and more group clearence than Canton.
My car sits REALLY low. I just can't image what it would have been like with a cast pan. Tear a hole in a steel pan, fix it. Cast pan, through it away.
Still, they are cool aren't they?

Another alternative is Milodon. I've got their 'T' Cobra Road Race pan with full baffling. Holds 7 quarts and is a very low profile and well made pan. Got my best price from PAW in CA.

A good oil pan with a windage tray and crank scraper is a functional item not a cosmetic item. You can truely gain up to about 25hp with one of these.
