Sigh,

Well I put everything back together and have the same exact problem! Can you believe it? Well I ordered a new water pump from Edelbrock and it should be in tomorrow. If that doesn't work I'm going to use a pyrometer and see if I'm getting hot spots in the block. I may have to yank the block out, as a last resort, and have it cleaned out.

That really sucks. Sorry to hear that you are still having the same problem. Good luck with the pump because your options are becoming limited at this point, not much you haven't tried.

OK Boys...here goes:

It appears the problem was the water pump all along. I replaced it with an Edelbrock and the car runs great! Took it out last night for about an hour spin and it never rose above 150. Oil running about 175 with good pressure.

I am glad I went through this exhaustive exercise because I found small potential problems that had to be addressed: Silicon in the fuel, Silicone in the heads, failing fuel pump, radiator with small hole.

Anyway I'm back up an running and a very happy camper.

What brand was the bad pump, and why did it fail?

PS, Ok I found where you told us it is a Milodon high vol. Is that the one that is made in Japan? I installed a milodon unit on my friend's Classic roadsters, We chose it due to the price and the inlet being on the passenger's side.

Steve,

I have no idea what the problem was with the pump.

Don't know where it was made but it is a Milodon alum hi volume. Most companies make a passenger side pump but they are mainly, for a 351W or 5.0, a serpentine reverse rotation.

If you start running hot check that pump first.

So far, and it was only a short ride, the Edelbrock has kept the engine cooling better. Even at idle the temp rose to the 160 mark and the thermostat opened. Once that happened the temp never rose above 150. I had it idleing for about 20 minutes as I reset the timing, adjusted the carb and hooked up a vacuum gauge.

I recall right from the beginning the Milodon had the engine running hotter and at idle would climb up in the 180 or so range. I'd be interested to see how it performs in heavy traffic on a hot day. May have to wait till next year.

Hard to see your pump but I took a good look at mine at is has 'Japan' stamped in the casting.

Rosco, glad you solved it. When I built my 351 I also used a Milodon high flow pump. Car would overheat within minutes. Turned out the pump was a reverse rotation pump,the vanes are curved, in spite of coming in box with a sandard rotation part number! Not easy to figure out.

First off, I'm glad to hear that you finally found the source of your heating problem.

I was wondering if the problem with the old pump could be the impellor slipping on the shaft, this would probably only occur at higher than idle revs. Why don't you put the pump in the vice and see if you can force the impellor to turn on the shaft, just out of curiosity. It would be interesting to see if this was the real problem.

I tried that, twice. I also boiled it and tried it. I have this visceral feeling, as posted earlier by Steve R. that I have the wrong pump. My car has never run as cool and as consistant as it does now.

Yesterday I spent some time on the road tweeking the timing and the carb. I was in traffic for some time and actually had the fan shut off (which I've never been able to do). The temp stayed a constant 150-155. While in traffic it crept up to 180 and I turned on the fan. I dropped quickly back down to 150. I suspect I am now going to replace my 160 therm with a 180.

I can idle that car all night and it will never go over 150. Before it would get hot the minute I got into traffic, even with the fan on all the time.

From my 'Your not going to believe this file':

I just got off the phone with Tom at Milodon. I ran the numbers on the pump by him (19157A7BRLGMB) and he tells me it is from a 351C-400 ('70-'79)

I told him all the headaches and hundreds of dollars I spent diagnosing the overheating problem. I told him I had my original invoice which states the correct part number and that the box that came in was properly marked.

He blamed it on PAW who he said probably reboxed the pump. I told him good bye.
