Default Another Tremec Question

Alright, I had just about decided on the Tremec TKO II with the .83 5th gear. So, I made a couple of calls to check prices and availability and was told that the version with the .83 5th is a road race tranny that has a hardened gear set which is not very conducive to driving on the street (which is where I'll be spending 99.99% of my driving time). I asked if it was possible to get the .83 5th without the hardended gear set and was told it was not possible.

Is this accurate? Can anyone shed any light on this? Can anyone with the road race tranny comment on the shifting?

Also, I'd be interested to know where you found the best deal on your Tremec.

Thanks in advance,
Mike

Chaplin,
I got my best deal from Jim Swaar out in PA. Unfortunately he recently passed away but his son is running the business. They are race people and are dealers for Tremec. You can contact Eric at:

Roscoe-
Thanks for the link. I will give them a call. Which 5th gear do you have- .62 or .83?

Thanks,
Mike

I thought mine is a .68 overdrive.

Sorry about that, sure enough it is a .68.

Default TKO

Chaplin;

I think you might be getting a con job relative to the TKOll not being suitable for the street. the only difference, to my knowledge, is that the TKOll has a different grade of steel in 3rd gear and of course the .83 OD. Otherwise there the same and both will do fine on the street. Keep in mind if you use a 3.55 or higher rear end, the .68 OD 5th is about perfect for hiway cruising at low RPM,s. I got mine reg. TKO for $1200

Niles-
That is what I thought also, which is why I figured I'd ask the question here. Do you mind telling me who you bought your TKO from? Haven't seen one that cheap yet. Feel free to email me directly if you prefer mchaplyn@aol.com

Thanks in advance,
Mike
