White Smoke ?!?!?
While driving next to a friend of mine he noticed a continous cloud of white smoke coming out of the right sidepipe. The motor has 700 miles on it. It was not one big puff that came out but, he said, it continued to come out while I was in the throttle - mind you I was wide open...At idle and normal driving it is fine - no smoke at all. Could this just be the rings still being seated or am I looking at something that might be a bit more problematic ?? Had he not seen it I would have never noticed it...Also, the smoke was white, not blue...Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't take a chance. Do a compression test asap...do not run it until you look into the possibility of WATER in the cylinders.
ALSO...be aware that oil smoke sometimes looks a bit whitish to the untrained eye...either way, a compression test should get you the basic cylinder condition info. |
Often times, too, if it is a head gasket, the adjacent cylinder will also show a poor reading. If the compression test is inconclusive, try a leak down test, open your radiator and check to see if there are any air bubbles.

Agro 1, If its white smoke, its water in the combustion chamber. You should be going thru plenty of water, so watch your radiator level. A compression test probably won't show you where the leak is because if it did you would feel it missing right now. A leak down will tell you for sure. If the leak down test is ok, then it could be comeing from an intake water passage leak into the adjacent cylinder. Under acceleration, it would suck water by the intake gasket but not at idle or cruise. This could explain why its only one side smoking on acceleration. If its blue, do not run that pcv back thru the intake. Your motor has too much crank case preasure(power) to polute the intake charge. Good luck, Scott.

Is a leak down test easy to do ? Or, is it something diffucult that a good mechanic needs to do ?? Thanks for the info guys...

A leakdown test is performed by injecting/allowing pressure into the cylinder
Then over a period of time the pressure in the cylinder is monitored for loss...if you lose more than a small amount there is a problem. The comments made by the others here are dead on.
~~~~~~~~ If you don't have the proper equipment for a bleed down test, get ahold of someone who does. water in your cylinder will in short order, destroy The rings at the least. DON'T run it further, until you find out what is wrong !:CRY: |
I've seen really white smoke when a vacuum booster diaphram leaks and the engine vacuum pulls brake fluid through the system. Just a thought.
