electric vaccumn pump ????
I have a Superformance with vaccumn boost brakes. I'm installing Webers and am considering using an electric vac pump instead of the multiple port vaccumn set-up.. has anyone gone this route?? Where can I buy a pump?? Has anyone with a Superformance changed the master cyl to manual type???THANKS Steve McD.

They are loud and vibrate alot. Look at the brake suppliers like master power to buy one. I would rather tap the intake runners, all 8 of them. run that to a common plenum, there you can tap off for brakes and PCV, etc. Besides, drilling and tapping the manifold in 1/4"npt for the fittings, and installing the, pneumatic log fitting, and full day of bending and flaring stainless hardlines in 5/16" would be alot more fun. And it looks cool too. The hum of the electric vac pumps detracts from my aesthetic experience with the sidepipes.

I've used an electric vac pump before...Not on my Cobra, but another car. as a matter of fact I used 2 on that car. one for the brakes and the other for negative pressure in the oil pan..I found that if you used a vac canister with the one for the brakes the pump didn't have to run as much...email me jackvette@adelphia.net if you're interested in one of them

The one from Master Power is a General Motors unit....I bought both of mine from them....They were cheaper than I could get them from the General....

I have one on my car. Since I only have 9-10 inches of vacuum off the manifold, the power brake system just wouldn't work reliably.
As far as the noise, you can hear it but it's not bad at all. It just sounds like a small pump. I have a canister as well (I recommend this) and when I turn the key on, the pump runs for approximately 5 seconds and then shuts off. Doesn't run again until I apply the brakes a couple of times. Once the car is started, you'll never hear it over the pipes. One advantage is that you have power brakes anytime the key is in the on position, whether or not the car is running. Got mine from: Engineering Components, Inc. Vernon, CT (860) 872-7046 Part No EC1300 (ask for extra vacuum hose if you want to mount it in the trunk like I did) Gene |
I've never done this.... but my diesel powerd p/u uses a belt driven vacuum pump for brakes, etc. Perhaps one can be adapted to your car. I tend to think that this method would be more reliable too IMHO
