Sizzler _ I'm not totaly sure but I think this is something else, but it it may work together with crank offsets. I'm going to "unofficially" look this stuff over to as I am just curious. Any other input out there? B.T.W. - seems we are changing the direction of this thread away from the original theme. Sorry about that!

Sizzler,

Where did you copy this thread from? I'd like to read the entire discussion.

As for:

"In an earlier posting I talked about a guy who is running an under 300 inch flathead dragster at 7.7 sec and 175 mph; maybe faster now. I doubt that he is making 500-550 hp even on nitro, so the only thing I can think of is the natural advantage of the offset crank + the incredibly long stroke and rods of the flatheads. You would probably have to make 2-300 more horsepower on an overhead to get times like that. "

I would think that all other things being equal, the only difference being engine choice, the above theory is all wet. Unless someone else can convince me that horsepower is not the bottom line when it comes to moving like objects down a quarter mile strip.

Jim

I think there is more to it than "just HP". The missing item might be called, efficiency of HP. Some motors will just inherently spin up to a given RPM quicker than others will. If there the same HP, the one that "spins up" quicker will be a faster car, all other things being equal.

A dyno does not deliver ALL the elements of truth. This "off set" of the piston has a certain "ring of truth" to it that I find hard to dismiss as I contemplate the mysteries of "burn time" and "piston scrub". And it is equally hard to understand, lol. I love a good mystery!

Excaliber - The ability of a engine to "spin up" is a subject all into itself. You are correct it is one of the things not talked about on internet boards much. From formula engines to truck engines these extremes illistrate why some things work well and some don't, when talking about how a engine revs.

Offset cranks, offset rods, different firing orders, pistons put in backwards, staggard firing orders, the list is endless. These things have been tried down through the years by many kinds of racers with mixed results. Shucks, I think big block Chevy rods have .006th wrist pin offsets and this is stock. But running offset bores in racing is something that has been outlawed by some, or used by all when rules permit. It must be something that REALLY works and is not some snakeoil cure. I'm still watching this thread for some answers to this subject but sometime soon I will have some answers I hope. I don't think I would ever use this knowledge, but I am curious though. Like studying about how engines rev, offset boring is something worth looking into.
