Heater ByPass
I have a question....
I don't use a heater in the cobra and currently there is a short hose running from the waterpump to the intake, I assume between the two heater fittings.
A buddy of mine indicated that without a heater, the fittings should be plugged off not connected.
Can anyone help shed some light??

On my 302, I plugged the heater fitting on the water pump and put my fan sensor switch in the other hole. There is a second bypass that goes from the water pump to the thermostat housing.

I actually used my heater the other night on a drive "up country". Man it gets COLD up there in the "mountains", had to be in the 60's easy...........

Go to your auto parts store and buy the water pump bypass plugs (actually they are caps). They come in different sizes so take some kind of measurement. I plugged up the outlet on my waterneck and installed a bleeder off the intake manifold.

CalCobra, I've been told the short hose from the front of the manifold to the water pump should be left in place, as it is a coolant bypass that allows some circulation in the heads and block when the thermostat is closed. I've got the heater fittings plugged on mine too.

You need the regular bypass hose that goes from the pump to the intake. (little 90 degree jobber) The other two you can block off. If you are really cool, you will remove the water pump, pull out the hose nipple and tap it for a pipe plug. Unless you were good enough to get one with threaded fittings already, then pat yourself on the back.

Which one of the two water pump outlets is for the bypass (little 90 degree jobber)? I suspect it is the upper. Can you confirm?

The middle one is for the little bypass jobber, the outer one goes to the heater core. When buying the little bypass hose, there are two that may work, one has same size ends, the other has one end wider than the other. Look at your parts to see which one you will need, the guy at NAPA may try and sell you the wrong one.

What Middle? I've got two outlets close together, one higher than the other, located on the passenger side. They have like 5/8" slip on fittings for a hose. It is a normal rotation high volume pump on a 351W. I suspect that the upper is for the bypass and the lower is the one I block off.

I just went out and looked at mine as I also didn't put a heater in and the upper one is the bypass. I just put a screw in plug in the intake manifold and one of the rubber caps with a clamp on the lower outlet in the water pump. I built mine in 1997 and it has been that way ever since with no problem. I have a flowkooler high volume aluminum pump but it has the same configuration as yours does.

Thanks for verifying that for me. I put a bleeder valve on the intake manifold to get that last bit of air out.

Opps, should've been more clear. The one closer to the middle of the car, not the more outboard (pass side)hole. There should only be two holes.
