Steering Wheel Shake - an Update
Ok guys, I've been doing a lot of research based on feedback from my previous post. My comments that follow assume that everyone with the problem has had both their alignment and balance set correctly.
I am convinced the problem is due to out of round (force wise) wheel and tire combos. I don't mean dimensionally or balance but rather in their ability or rool smoothly while under load. The Hunter company makes a machine which will measure this "out of roundness" while the tire is turning on your wheel. Again, not the dimentional out of roundness but the force out of roundness. They have good information at www.gsp9700.com. I would advise that everybody go there and take a look.
The problem with the machine is that it does not necessarily cure the problem. That is because the machine does not grind the tires. It instructs the tech to move the high point of the tire to the low point of the rim. If your rim is perfectly round and the tire is not, there is nothing you can do! the thought of moving the tire on the rim is not to appealing either.
The optimum solution would be to find the high point (forces) and grind that part of the tread down a bit until the assembly would roll true. If anyone out there is aware of where this can be done please let me know. I would be happy with the name of the machine.
In the mean time I will bring my tire and rim assemblies to my local shop and see what the 9700 has to say about my Trigos and T/As. I'll post the results as soon as I get them.
