Unhappy '87 Vette Diff Pinion Seal Leak

My '87 diff is slinging oil out of the pinion seal and I'm planning on taking it to a local Chevy dealer this AM and have the techs take a look at it. I suspect it's just a seal that dried out from sitting too long (the diff sat in my car for a loooooong time while I was building it). When I talked to the service mgr last week, he mentioned that worn bearings could cause things to loosen up enough to start a leak. I don't know how many miles are on the unit, but I don't think it has that much wear on it since I picked it up in '91 and didn't start using it again until a few years ago (have only put about 6k miles on it since). It operates fine, no vibrations or noises (other than occasional typical posi noises at low speeds). My question is this, can the pinion seal be replaced without disturbing the rest of the assembly too much? Is it as simple as removing the yoke and replacing the wearable parts or does the pumpkin need to be pulled out and overhauled at this point?

Mike-
I don't know the answer to your question, but I know where you might find it if no one comes forward here. Try the forums at www.corvetteforum.com .

Lightbulb Thx for your reply, Tommy....

but I already tried that site and didn't get a reply.

Roger Bolick sent me an e-mail with helpful info (thanks Roger!!)

The Chevy Tech I spoke to yesterday says he can change the seal without removing the diff from the car, but it'll take at least a couple of hours, and @$75/hr shop rate.......

So now I'm thinking maybe I'll pull the D36 diff out myself and have shorter gears (3.73?) installed along with new seals....

or maybe even upgrade to a D44..... anyone have a D44 rear for sale or trade?

Mike
