Which shifter for my toploader?
The shifter and linkage I have is out of a 66' Fairlane. All the
linkage rods are worn and without bushings. Holes are stripped where the lever bolts on. Can anyone tell me which shifter to get? Trans is 24" long, small in, small out, wide ratio.
Thanks, Dan

Hurst was THE shifter for four speeds back then. Call 'em, or check their website. Likely Hurst still makes them.

shifter
Dan,
I have the same transmission in my car. The shifter I have is the
Hurst compettition plus, super shifter. The shifter rods are
all stright. I would think the Hurst could still provide the shifter.
I purchased mine over 20 years ago. Good luck

What are the advantages to the "toploader' trans. ?
It seems to be held in very high regard, and a very desirerable
way to go. Is it superior to say a T-5? More expensive?Stronger? Are they still made new? Are they all used and rebuilt?

Look at Dave Kees Toploader web site. It is one tough gear box.
Soon will be produced as a totally new transmission.
See the web site.

Dan,
Yes on the Hurst comp.+ as the way to go. Yes you can still get it. Also, save the shifter lever from the old Ford linkage, including the knob. You can get an adapter to mount it to the Hurst linkage. The adapter bolts to the side of the Hurst lower arm in place of the hurst lever and is bent at 90 degrees with bolt holes in the top for mounting the Ford lever. The adapter even has provision for angling the lever toward the driver, just like in originals. I think David Kee would be a good source for the adapter. If not, he'll certainly know where to send you.
BTW used this setup in my car with top loader and loved it!
Just remember the small shaft toploader was meant for small blocks not 460's with gobs of torque. Take it easy with the drag race starts and you'll be fine though.
Al

Thanks Al, I''ll call Dave Kee on monday.
Yes, I know about input and out put shafts. I have to keep the
cost down for now. I paid $200. for this tranny and internally it's
in great shape.
I won't side step the peddle, or use slicks. Thanks again.

Regarding the Toploader, for many on this forum, and others like it, including the Mustang Forums, it is the period correct box for Fords between '64 and '73.
Very strong with available parts. In addition, to the wide and close ratio box, David Kee www.4speedtoploaders.com also sells a Road Race Sebring box that has closer ratios than the 2.32 box. He is the best supplier of these parts in the country. He has components that no one else has (rail kits, lids, speciality gear sets, etc.). He has developed a strong following and could be very helpful with your shifter question. Give him a call.
