first drive

Well, after getting my clutch problems worked out, I finally got to take my first drive last night. Awesome!!!! It was at night and about 27 degrees out and no windshield, I froze my a$$ off but it was still great. One question I have for the engine guru's. When I get on the gas a bit, engine has a pop to It. I was wondering if Any one could lead me into the right direction on where to start looking for problems. Could it be timing or in the carb or something else? I dont know. Would appreciate the help. Bly. (Engine is a 351W 650 holley DP, stock duraspark ignition.)

Could be timing all right. Is it "advancing" beyond base timing setting? You can check that with a light.

Another common item is the accelerator pump shot in the carb. Take the air cleaner off and look down the throat of the beast. When you "snap open" the throttle with your hand you should see a "squirt" of fuel being shot into the venturis on both "primary" sides. If not, the engine goes instantly "lean" and backfires or pops.

A couple of quick checks for you, I'm sure there is more to do, maybe you'll get "lucky"!

How about the fact that it was 27 degrees out? Probably just not warmed up fully, and running a little cold/lean. How long were you driving? I doubt it was for too long with no windshield and no plates. Check out the ideas others have suggested, but reserve judgement until you can get a true run, on a warmer day. These things are not especially cold blooded.

Congratulation on the first drive, bet you were plenty warm with excitement.
