In 1973 The University of Louisiana did a study on cryogenic tempering conducted by Dr. Randall Barron. Over a years time, the research team study several different applications that covered a wide range of tool steels. There have also been studies conducted by various Universities from Finland to China that are available online, all with great results and data. The latest research was completed by Dr. Joan Alexandru and Dr. Constantin Picos of the The Polyttechnic Institute of Jassy, Romania. The test was completed with results achieved from a JEOL IXA-5A Electron probe, a DRON-1 X-Ray Diffractometer, a Quantimet 720 Quantitave Microscope and a Chevernard Differential Dilatometer to recieve a myriad of scientific results. I also have that data available if someone is up for some mind-numbing reading!!

I cryogenically treated my entire race car chassis.
It happened accidentally as I brought it home in the pickup night before last.

Nothing like grabbing steel frame rails at about 5 degrees to wake you up.

I know a guy in Oregon that had his knives and safety razor cryogenically treated and he said he use the same razor for two years without replacing the blade, and the sharpness of his knife edges lasted ten times longer then what they had before.

Correct me I am wrong, but didn't NASA use this process for materials in their space program?

About 3 years ago we looked into this very seriously and even posted questions about it here. We were thinking about the process for some rotors on one of our DV II's. Our "Brake" sponsor stated that the "effects" weren't proven yet and suggested we wait a few years. I do know that some of the private Viper race teams tried it with some success.

Can you tell me in very basic terms, is the process improved, changed significantly in the last few years? If so what is done different. I'm sure there is a market here.

Inquiring slow minds want to know!

So far the process is about is refined is it is going to get with brake rotors, we currently treat for the federal government, about 150 different race teams (and counting) and two of the nations largest shipping companys. We are currenlty working to treat the nation's largest school bus fleet. Some places claim that in order for the process to work that the pads and rotors need to be treated. Through extensive testing we have found that the pad shows no increase in life through treatment. If the rotors are treated there is an increase in both rotor and pad life as well as increased performance. There is a great market for cryogenically treated rotors, unfortunately every brake company we have spoke with except for one is "not interested" due to the life increase of their product.

I just wanted to say thank you for all the responses I had from this posting. We are always happy to help when it comes to any auto enthusiasts.

If you are wondering, all the club cobra members who requested information got a free cryogenically treated disposable razor just to give them a firsthand idea of what cryogenics can do.

The cryogenic process definetly works on target rifle barrels. There have been documented tests on the improved accuracy after the cryo process. Again, its not hardening but stiffening of the barrels that leads to more accuracy. As a side note, that supports the explanation of more density, cryo barrels are easier to clean.
