Your Habits for Starting Her up?
This may be one of those questions that is hard to answer on the board, but am curious as to what most of you do as a routine for starting your car -- from cold.
Weather in SA is not that bad recently (high 50s, low 60s), but am still trying to get the hang of starting my Cobra without cranking it a few times.
General strategy is to push in the pedal about 1/8th the way and pull the choke out about 3/4inch. Seems like I either flood it or don't give it enough gas. Usually get it straight after the third crank and off she goes. Also, I don't tend to keep the choke on for very long.
Any suggestions, tricks or ideas you all have picked up in getting this going?? Probably not hurting anything by my current method, but am curious.
Thanks!
PS-Engine is a 427 bored to 440, with a 4bbl carb.

Hit the throttle once and flip the starter switch. Starts every time instantly. Usually beforehand I do a little dance around the car and chant something........can't hurt.
Usually takes about 3 or 4 minutes of blipping the throttle to get it to idle, but its only about 20 degrees outside. Engine is a 302/331 with a 4 barrel holley.

Minor blip on the throttle 20 seconds before start. Crank engine--no gas. If it doesn't catch right away, I crank again--no gas. Usually by the third try at most, she'll catch. On mine, giving it gas will cause flooding--then the only way to get it to start is to keep your foot on the gas.
No chokes, so I just take a minute or so blipping the throttle before driving off.

Turn the key and try to supress the grin if anyone is watching! If I touch the throttle before it starts, it is prone to flooding.

Open hood and tap the throttle ONCE. Reach inside, flip'er outta gear - smack the fuel pumps - flip the red toggle cover up - give the starter switch a good yank and she cracks to life.
Takes a minute or so of modulating the throttle by hand before she settles into a goregous symphony of perfectly timed explosions.
I like to have my hands directly on'er when I warm'er up
Wait till oil temp is up and rip a nice burnout in the garage. Nothing sounds better

I don't touch the gas and crank it for a few seconds until I see the oil pressure guage start to move and then I give the gas a pump and it fires......

casaleenie,
Looks like you made the same mistake I did. It took me a while to figure what the post was referring to.
As for "flipping her red toggle"... DON'T.
Sounds like she might be flooded!!

I do a West Virgina start. My house and garage is on the side of a hill and the driveway has a slight down grade. So, I first roll the car out of the garage by hand, set the hand brake and do a walk around: tire inflation, no dust or bugs on paint, cats on engine . . . a general look see.
Now for the moment . . . jump in, buckle up and check mirrors. The engine is topped with carburetors, so I push the pedal to the metal once and wait a minute or so to let the fuel vaporize.
Release the hand brake, roll backwards out of the driveway into the road and steer the car so it will be aimed downhill as it rolls backwards. As the car begins rolling forward at 10 mph or so and oil pressure registers, flip on the ignition, shift into fourth and let clutch out slowly. After the 427 rolls over a few times it rumbles to life without wear and tear on the starter pinion and ring gear.
I've had to replace the starter motor and ring gear once too many times, so this procedure eliminates the stress of waking up the beast after the Winter's hibernation.

Holley HP - no choke
1. Plug oil heater in and wait 20 minutes (3 gallons oil)
2. Check filter element (screen) for debris on return side of oil system while oil is warming
3. Remove the air cleaner
4. Turn the idle knob in 2 turns (idle screw has been replaced with a knurled knob)
5. Pour a Dixie Cup full of gas down the carb (approx.)
6. Crank over while holding throttle 1/4 open then flip ignition switch on
7. Turn idle down gradually over the next few minutes, replace air cleaner, and unplug oil heater.
8. Drive off

Like Roscoe says:
Flip on Accusump, leave it on whilst I check around the car
Turn on ignition, wait for fuel pressure to refill carb bowls.
3 - 4 pumps on the throttle and away she goes.
I have no choke fitted, car starts and idles OK even in sub zero temps. Drivable from cold too.

Holley Lemans 788cfm, no choke.
1. Ignition on
2. Flip on fuel pumps, look for 6-7 lbs
3. Pump pedal once, release.
4. Start
5. Modulate pedal for about 10 seconds for steady, if lumpy, idle.
6. Warm for additional 60 seconds, listening to that wonderful valve train...
7. Drive
Going back to work, now.

Single holley, no choke, really cold: stomp gas once, release gas pedal, turn key, then modulate throttle till it'll idle. On motors with way too much intake timing, anything other than this sometimes causes them to pop through the intake and catch the carb on fire.
Dual carbs: turn key, don't touch throttle till it starts running, no choke or pre squirt necessary.
EFI: turn key, walk away

850 Holly double pumper with no choke. Turn fuel pump on and wait for a second or so. Floor gas pedal once or twice depending on how cold it is and how long car has been setting between starts. Play with throttle until it idles by itself. Drive first few blocks at around 2,000 RPM to make sure I set every car alarm in hearing distance off.
