Lucas wiper motor stroke
Gents,
I am looking for the drawing or specs on where to relocate the crankpin on the lucas wiper motor to alter the stroke.
I looked in the pdf version of ERA's assembly manual, but the illustration is not available in that form. Any help would be great.
Thanks,
Steven

Hey Steve R ! I don't know if this is what you are looking for but..!
This is going to be as confusing as hell. Pull the wiper motor out, remove the cover, pull the large gear... it should have a small white plastic tab on it approximately 1/2 long, on the flat side of the gear. This is the tab that makes or actually breaks the circuit so it parks.
Is it there? If it is, look on the opposite side of the gear and you will see corresponding holes. Pry the tab out of the original holes and reinstall in the other set. Reinstall and give it another try.
DV
I had a problem tring to get the wiper motor to park...and this is what I did...and it works perfect!! Thanks DV

Gerry,
Thanks for the info. I am using the correct Lucas toggle switch My wipers park correctly. The arc of the wiper arm travel is to short for the Cobra's windshield. I need to modify the crankpin location as per Bob's instructions. Seems pretty streight foward.
Steven
P.S.
If you are using the GM column switch to operate the wiper motor, 2 relays must be incorperated to get it to park per the Lucas design. The interacion of the Lucas switch and the cam operated switch in the motor create a magnetic brake which haults the motor before it can get past the cam on the gear.( it grounds the normally powered side of the motor's winding) I have seen wipers work O.K. when not wired for the brake, but also have seem them skip over the cam. When wired per the original design, you can really hear the motor come to a screaching hault.

In 71 I bought a 56 AC Bristle.I left it in California till better weather for the drive home to Iowa. My uncle rewired the car. I was there when we installed the wiper moter. I remember him taking the motor apart to show me the contact on the gear that when power is conected will carry the moter to park position.I later incorporated an add on interval switch that put power momentarily to the motor to move it off park position then the contact would finish the stroke. It worked great in the Washington rain.Had the same switch for years on a 77 Toyota truck untill the contacts inside the switch started sticking. The switches were no longer available and I lost my interval wipers cababillities.
Is there instructions with a drawing that shows the electrical connections in detail like the gear modification?

Michael,
I drew a schematic in my quest to understand the prince of darkness. It is a little crude. I will take a picture of it and post it. Standby......

Hey Steve! Ya..! I have the GM colunm...and had a hell of a time to get the wipers to work right...after fallowing DV's instructions...I found out the manual wireing for the wipers was wrong. Sometimes you'd think someone would correct them as wrong information is spoted, and revise the manual....but no! Go figure? Thanks for the praise on the color....the stripes are accualy silver. There is a pearl in the color's which makes it change with the sun...but just a little.
Take care buddy and maybe will run into each other at a Fling.

Steve,
Great job on the schematics. Something I've always wanted to tear into and diagram, but just never took the time.
Pictures are copied and inserted into my binder of essential repair information.
I'm sure a lot of us can benefit by your effort and your willingness to share it.
Many thanks

Jim,
No problem. Thanks to Bob Putnam's help, my wipers now wipe all the way. His info is golden. Thanks again Bob.

I'm wrong again it's printing just the left to some where in the middle of the drawings. I got to get my kid up here and have him show me how to print just the pictures.

Michael,
I think you could also go to my gallery, save the pictures to a file, then print them from there.

Try this to save pictuires.....
1. Position your mouse/cusor over the picture you want.
2. Right click the mouse.
3. Select the "Save Picture As:"
4. Choose a 'location' on your hard drive to save the picture, and hit the "save" button. You can use the default file name or choose your own name for the picture....... helps to find it later on if you forgot where you stuck it

Jose,
Did you try the nitrous oxide kit from Jeggs? Just kidding. If you could find some way to increase the voltage to the motor, I think it will run faster. Just how you would accomplish that is the question of the day. Relays and a motorcycle battery come to mind, but I'm sure there is a better way.
Thanks for the interesting question. Now I'm going to be pondering this for days
Steve
