Default 9" rearend?

Is a 9" rearend really important for a F5? I don't have my kit yet, just planning. I found one and don't know if I should buy it or not. I know the advantages and all but is it worth it. The guy wont give me a price he told me to make an offer.

Lightbulb We need more info

In order to help you out:

What motor and horsepower do you have planned?

What will the car be used for? Drag racing at all? Or just cruising and driving around ?

I have a 9 inch housing with a Strange Engineering 3.0 gears and center section, and SE 33 spline Pro Street axles.. said to be good for 1200 HP.. twice what I currently have, because I may put something even meaner in the car later.....

My car will be a crusier. But I want it to be quick, top speed is not important. I will have a 302 with about 300-350 hp my main concern is handling and beating my friends 02 Viper or at least chasing him.

What gear ratio should I be looking for?

Assuming you will be running a T-5 I would not run anything less than a 3.73 : 1.

Yes, I would have a T-5. Are 275 tires on the rears what you people would reccomend? I have been looking around at tires. I am more confused about that now 15" or 17" rims what to do?

Thumbs up The neat thing about the Ford 9 inch

Is that the center section just drops out.. so if the 3.73 suggested, or whatever you use is too low, you can swap it later.

As to wheels, 15 inch looks more "original" while 17 inch with low profile quality radials will make an amazing improvement in handling. My car feels like it is (almost) glued to the pavement in most cornering, with 17 inch super wide low profile P-zero Pirellis. .

Thanks guys, the p-zeros are cool tires. And I love Cobras with 17's and low profile tires. I think thats my setup. The p zeros are a little spendy$$$ but I think they are way better than BFG radials.

We'll see...

Gear88,

If you're using a T5 transmixer (that doesn't explode), a 9" is about 3 times as strong as you need. I hope you paid a good price...

I did't buy the 9" yet. I am planning to build this fall/winter if all goes well with my new business... I just have the chance to pick up a few things now that won't come with the 5.0 mustang. So I figure I would get some expert opinions. (Thanks) I don't think I will buy the 9" Instead I will put the money into go fast goodies.

Wink Bob is right

That the 9 inch is overkill for your current power plans...

A stock 9 inch Ford rear in good shape is good for 600 to 800 hp, (depending on who you ask) However if you ever beef up your HP with something like a "418" small block, (500 + HP) I would recommend the 9 inch Ford or similar.. you can always do this later.

The T5 tranny is good for what? 300 hp ? I think Bob is telling you it's the weak link..

I just found out the rating hp for a T5 from someone else too. wow I will definatly pass on the 9" and spend my money else where. No plans for 600hp yet.

Thanks for the info!
