Default Accusump sizing

I’m looking to install an Accusump to pre-lube before cold starts. Plans are to use the sump just for starts and then close the valve off after the pressure increases and the unit has refilled.

Canton offers a couple of Accusump sizes, but for this initial lubrication will the 1 quart unit work (according to Canton, the one quart unit actually holds around 1 ½ quarts) or is the 2 quart unit recommended because of the amount of oil required to pump into the engine. Any advise would be appreciated.

The description of the 1 qt unit on the Accusump webpage says it is " designed as a pre oiler for all applications." So, if all your using it for is a pre oiler, the 1 qt should do it.

I installed an Accusump for surge control after hearing about another local Cobra guy blowing an engine while autocrossing due to lack of oil at the pickup. The 2 quart would have been enough, but for an extra $8, I went with the 3 qrt.

Yep - everything that Pete said

You have to spend the same amount of money on oil line and fittings, say why not have the benefits of the larger systems.

I think the 3qt cylinder adds an extra safety margin, as well as looking pretty purposeful in the engine bay!

Thumbs up Accusump

I installed the 2 qt size about 3 months ago. Use it for pre-oiling as you have indicated. But I would strongly recomend you to get the electric valve. Depending were you put the valve, you may get tired of opening the hood, starting (and as most of these monsters do, stall a couple of times) and closing the hood.

I went with the 2QT because of room restrictions, but if you've got space, go for the 3QT.

By the way, if you happen to have a mechanical oil preassure gauge in your dash, it's a great feeling to see that gauge load up to 40PSI or more and slowly decrease befor start-up. Now you know it's ready to play

Pete / Craig / Hector,

Thanks for the feedback. I'm going to go with the 2 qt unit, since the upcharge is negligible. Not enough room for the 3 qt unit, unless I start cutting the frame.
