Impact Wrench Advice
Can anyone reccomend a good air or electric impact wrench that will not break the bank. Is an electric one even worth considering? I have Craftsman air compressor 5HP 20 gal. stand up type. Will this drive an impact wrench? I know it won't drive a sander, but sanders really use up the air quickly. Air wrench is just for home use.

Yes, that compressor will drive an impact wrench. Go pneumatic, not electric.

for a good air wrench--try Ingersoll Rand. Usually less than $300 and they are very good tools.

Mr. Fixit,
I was afraid my compressor was too puny. Any advice on affordable make and model? Possible to get a good one for around $200 max.?

I have one of the lower $ snap on 1/2" drive wrench.
I have had it for years,no problems yet,just put a few drops of air oil in befor using it.

I-R or C-P impact wrenches are good, but I personally see no need for one other than in a production shop. Now there are 3/8" drive air ratchets. They can be very helpful when installing a lot of fasteners.
Regardless of which pneumatic tool you use, an oiler on the line or as Bill says, a few drops of oil--Marvel Mystery Oil--before you use it each time, will ensure a long tool life.
A 15 hp two-stage compressor with an upright high-volume tank is best if you're going to use a lot of air.

Harbor Freight Tools!
Yeah, I know. Alot of stuff they sell is so-so, but I have several impacts, (1/2", 3/8" butterfly, 3/8" Air Rachet) all from Harbour Freight and have had them for a few years, except for the butterfly which I bought a few months ago for $30. While they are not good for production shop use, they work great for home. I use mine just about every weekend, tore down a '69 351W last weekend with 'em as a matter of fact. You don't need to spend big buck$ on an impact, just as they said above, DON'T FORGET THE OIL BABY!

For home weekend use go to Lowes. I bought low priced stuff and have had no problems. I paid $27 for a die grinder and have already gotten $200 use out of it. If it breaks I'll try and fix it myself or toss it.

I have found the Ingersoll Rand Model IR2131P to be very nice impact gun for the weekend user. We use them here at work to open stuff up out on the decks of oil tankers. Everything on a ship deck is rusted and corroded on. These guns have a nice feature that they have more power when you are taking something off than when your are putting it on. But you can find them on the net and at some of the local home improvement stores.

Get it from a pawn shop, cheap cheap and most will let you return if it does not work but, never never use an impact on a cobra. couple a weeks ago I picked up a NAPA torque wrench with case for $30.00, tested it against my friends, perfect...

You can get some incredibly cheap air impact wrenches from Harbor Freight , (including Ingersol-Rand) and they will work adequately for home use. They work best for disassembly, but I would be very careful when tightening anything. That's what torque wrenches are for.

If you have a Sears Service Center near you, go there. The one we have here has rebuilt stuff,everythig from tools to video cameras. All these are Sears items returned for damage or defects,they have been rebuilt and usually sell for 50% to 60% of the origianl cost and they give you a warranty to boot.... Five years ago I bought an air imapct gun,use and abuse it and it is still going great,three years ago I bought a Sony video camera and it also has worked great....
Some of their stuff looks brand new without a scratch on them and some show their use,but all are rebuilt to new specs.... I try to stop by every three or four months,cause you never know what they will have in stock...
