Default I'm about to order these

If you would please,
I would like to ask afew question before I call and place my order for these tires. I have a new set of 15" wheels, so I am interrested in the Good Year "Cobra" 26.5"x 15" slicks.
1. Has anyone used them in Autocross? I plan to use them for both autocross and open track events.
2. Do they warm up fairly quick, and retain temp for next run?
3. Did you have tread cut into them (for autocross), or run just plain slicks?
4. Do you need to run tubes, and if so, do you recommend the expensive racing tubes? Any problems running tubeless?
5. Has anyone found them other than from Rodger Kraus Racing.
6. How does one gracefully go into a tire store and ask to have tires mounted and balanced on your rims when not buying tires from them? This may sound really funny, but I have never done it.

Default Regarding the mounting...

it is really no big deal whether you bought the tires from them or not - they will charge you according to the task required. If you feel you are being "mounted" go to another store. Best of luck!

Tire Rack has a list of approved mounters in your area. If you have someone who puts your tires on your daily driver then they should be happy to help you.

Terry, I have run several sets of the goodyear slicks at open track events and they are bias ply. They take a lap at least to warm up, they may not have the kind of instant stick you want for autocross. I do not run tubes. You may want to try the softer compound for autcross. I run the harder compound because it works just as well once heated and lasts longer. Scott

If you are running these Goodyears on the street, do you have any problems with the heat cycles as mentioned by Kevin? If the racing compounds are so susceptable to heat cycles, I could see this being a major issue.

Of course, maybe you don't notice the reduction in traction at safe and sane street speeds.

Hi Guys
This is an old thread,but I have another question:
I bought the vintage eagles for my shell valley,the treaded ones,although I havent ran them yet,I was thinking of using the same on the csx car if and when it arrives,since this car will get very little driving,none in the rain,and I want to mock a vintage racer,would I be totally out of my mind to buy the slicks for this car ? this is a street car only.Other than not being dot approved,what is the down side ?
another thing,does any one know if they make the "shorter" front tire ? i really like that look,and I need the clearance,,

Well, it's hard to say if you're out of your mind or not
I will say this- if you run the slicks on the street, and for whatever reason you get caught out in rain- those tires are like a deathwish!!
No matter how slow you go, you'll be all over the place... just pretend you're on sheets of ice.

By the way, everyone in this thread seems sold on RKR, but I get mine at <http://www.sascosports.com/products/products.htm> great customer service and cheaper too!

I'd stick w/ the treaded ones and buy the slicks just for the track.

Red face For what it's worth

Tim,
I have the Vintage slicks for the track. Really good and sticky.
I will buy another set of the rain tires for the street at some point to replace my original tires, just for the look; as the car gets less street use than I expected.

Now, I have had an experience of taking the car out of the trailer with the slicks on, just for a run into a town that we were spending the night. "Just to see the town." Here's the problem: the slicks are really a soft compound and pick up every stone, pebble, and spec of dust on the road. Every piece likes to find some part of the body to make contact with. Bottom line here is; our little trip into town ending up being about a 30 mile trip around the lake thru some pretty rough roads. We got lost - really lost. Even had to stop and ask for directions. Saw the town and the whole lake, dam and all! Luckily, no damage to the car - but would I do it again - NO WAY.

Now the rain tires are not as soft a compound (as I understand) and probably better suited for limited street use. I do believe Jamo has them on his car for street use (from what I remember reading here on CC- best check with him for an accurate answer).

Goodyear Race tires on the street,

You can run them on a Cobra for 30,000 miles if you want. My brother has a '64 289 he's owned since new and has 125,000 miles on it. He ran Blue Streak Sports Car Special Intermediate tires when they were being made. They were mostly slicks simuliar to a Yokohama A-008-RS DOT race tire. They worked fine in all conditions on the streets and Freeways in Los Angeles for years.
The new "Cobra Tire" will probably be the last tire you'd have to buy because I doubt that most of you use your Cobra as a daily driver, as my brother did.
The cars are so light that tire wear is not an issue on the street. Only if you run them on the track, or on a very hot day in the desert, will they get soft enough (High Heat Cycle) to pick up pebbles and the like. If driven on the street only, this will not be a problem.
Tubes- You'll only need tubes if your running wire wheels, (a Must), or real Magnesium wheels that have not had Epoxy appied to the inner rim to seal the rim from Leaking. Magneaiun is pourus and air will seap through an un-treated wheel. This is not a problem with Aluminum Wheels.
Unless any of you have original Hailbrand MAGNESIUM or American MAGNESIUM wheels that are not treated (or wires), you don't need tubes.

The picture of your car appears to have a totally different tire than my Vintage Goodyears. The lettering is smaller and more percise to say nothing of the "Blue Streak" YAAAAAAAA, it brings back memories.
I think we all would like a little more info on what you have there.

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier, Kevin...
I use the "Vintage Blue Streaks" at the track- nice and sticky, but aren't (quite) full-blown slicks, in other words they have "chicken scratches" on them.
I run:
"Firm" #3002's, 6.00-15's (8.4" actual width) up front, and
"Firm" #3050's, 8.00-15's (10.1" actual width) in the rear.

Don't be fooled- these aren't "firm" in any sense other than they'll last several season's worth of open track sessions.
I get rubbing on the rear, but that's because I have soft springs and 289 FIA fenders!
Soon to be remedied!
