Gas Fumes in Trunk
I love my new purchase, but I recently discovered that the trunk of my Unique 289FIA smells like gas. I have checked all the clamps that connect the gas tube to the filler cap and tank inlet, and they are tight. There appear to be no leaks anywhere, but the trunk smells like fuel, and anything that I put back there ends up smelling like gas, too.
Has anyone else had this problem, and know how to put a stop to it? Having gas fumes in the same small compartment as my battery is a definite concern... Thanks, Russ |
I had the same problem. I replaced the fuel gauge sending unit gasket with an RTV that was approved for fuel. Permatex Black I think, but any RTV approved for use with fuel is fine. I also coated the screws with it as they are exposed to the fuel too.
Just make sure the surfaces are clean and dry and give it the full cure time before you drive it. On mine it appeared that the screw threads were exposed to the fuel and it wicked up the threads, not enough to see liquid fuel but enough to smell. If you pull up your carpet I bet you can smell fuel in the area where the sender is located. Keith |
I have the same problem..
that I haven't been able to fix (yet). I have a Contemporary and the sender/tank is not within the trunk at all. The clamps and extension pipes even the overflow tube looks fine. Let us know if you have fixed this problem. Thanks!

Russ: I had the same gas smell in the trunk area. I put silicon on all connections in the area of the fuel fill tube to the tank and the sender unit as well as the fuel line vent tube. I don't smell gas as often but occasionally I get a wiff. Must just come with the territory.

I also had gas fumes in the trunk. It turned out to be the bushing in my fuel pump was leaking.

I had the same problem...... It finally discovered that with a fullish tank and a little hard cornering the fuel would slosh up the filler and get past the fuel cap seal, then run down the lemans cap mounting screws in the recess and into the trunk...
