Aluminum Intake Cleaning
 
Need some suggestions on how to clean engine coolant "Brownish" stains on intake manifold? Ideas would be appreciated, Thanks.

I have been happy with a stainless steel brush on a die grinder and lots of elbow grease mixed with brake cleaner. I now have every part coated with JET-HOT for just this reason. Jet_hot also keeps corrosion from eating things and always looks brand new . If you had coated your intake even the area where exhaust crosses over will not discolor, helps keep fuel charge cool and expells heat. It is a great product.

I bought a used Edelbrock Performer RPM and it was grease stained and dirty. I had the manifold powdercoated in a metallic silver and I am real happy with the results. Look at my photo gallery for a pic of the manifold.

The best stuff I've ever used that is not harmful to painted finishes, polished aluminum or my own skin is Mirachem Cleaner Degreaser. And it's NASCAR approved . . . whopee! What really sold me on the stuff is it removes that stubborn yellow varnish stains from gasoline. Spray it on, let it foam up and wipe it off. It really works. In addition, it's water soluble. There's one problem other than it's pricey. The stuff can be hard to get, but you can get information on their web site; http://www.mirachem.com/

Earl, chttp://www.jet-hot.com.au/ I could have Jet-Hot applied for you but will give you the link to save you a few bucks shipping costs. They will take manifold as is and do all cleaning etc.. I would recomend you do any gasket matching first. Also remember all aluminium manifolds require gaskets made for alum. not same as iron manifolds. Before install just scuff gasket surface with Green 3M pad or 280 grit paper.
I have many parts done, the brake calipers are another must do for us and helps with heat as well as looking brand new for ever.

Warning, if you sand or bead blast your aluminum intake, it will attract dirt and grime like never before and will never be clean again. There are companies in Hemmings that redo aluminum intakes, I think they re-skin them with a thin layer of aluminum or something, never tried them. I just get them polished, then they clean easy.

Loctite markets a product called Duro Aluminum jelly. It's inexpensive (about $3) and usually available at your local hardware store. I've used it on a couple of stained intakes and had good results. You may have to play around with the time you leave it sit before rinsing it off.

if the intake is pretty clean, just has fuel stains....use carb cleaner....I use berrymans b-12 since its made to clean fuel and deposits it makes since it would do a good job. I spray it on a rag and cleaned up a little brown stain I had from a leaky metering block. I wouldnt hose down my engine with it unless it was a real mess....but the wet rag works well.

I would recomend HPC ( highperformancecoatings.com) . I use them for everything including our SaltRod that takes a beating from heat, fuel, and the salt....Ask for Jeff or Matt and let thm know you are a CC member

I had my exhaust coated by Jet-Hot and teh pipes are showing surface rust for the second time in less than 3 years. HPC will re-do them for a little more than the discount from Jet-Hot for them to coat the pipes a third time. They will NOT be going back to Jet-Hot. They headers still look great though.

I had a similar problem and wd40 cleaned it off mine. It had not been there long so yours may be a bit tougher.

My big problem is the black streaks on my trailer. I have tried eveything! Black streak remover is a joke!
