289 Cobra Mufflers
Greetings,
I'm looking for mufflers for a stock 289 Cobra. I'm looking for the original style oval glasspack type muffler, with 2" inlet and outlet. No more than 3-1/2" thick, please.
Please let me know if you have a source. I want to stay away from the turbo style and from the Flowmaster/SpinTech style. I like that 60's glasspack sound, if you know what I mean . . . .
Thanks for your help, as always!

Alan,
http://www.dynomax.com/documents/thrushglass.pdf
Dynomax make a quality product for very little money. Most exhaust shops can get you a pair with ease. You won't be disappointed with them.

Hi
Try talking to Gerry Hawkridge at Hawk Cars in England. He builds 289 cobra replicas which are very authentic. Hawk Cars - contact information

I believe Dave Wagner has some mufflers for the 289 cars that I saw at his place late last year. His son Mike visit's this site occasionally.
Who is David Wagner ?
- Allen.

Check with the Kirkhams ... they would probably be able to make some suggestions.

David Wagner,(248) 767-0548, mufflers complete with pipes. However, these are more for the restoration crowd as the exhaust is pretty small in cross section.

Alan, Dynomax has some small profile stainless Ultra Flows with 2" inlet/outlet. These are ovals. Are you looking for round type glasspacks?? I can make them with 2" inlet/outlet, & 3" bodies - any length up to 40". I can make them with or without packing. Also, all my 2" neck mufflers will have 2.25" internal flow tube. You may want to even consider my chambered Powerstick mufflers for a much more nasty/mean tone.

1964 style glasspacks
These were on CSX 2252 and sounded great:
Thrush 24200 - Walker Glasspack Mufflers - Overview - SummitRacing.com
They have a perforated center tube, instead of louvered, for much better flow. I also installed them on my AC MKIV and it's one of the best performance add-ons (and sound) I've done.
Good luck on any system you choose.

Hushpower
While probably thought of more as a "cruiser" muffler, I'll throw in a recommendation for Hushpower.
I went from side pipes to undercar exhaust with 2.25" dia pipes and 12" long Hushpowers. These units are marketed as resonators to use in conjunction with the longer (18", I think) Hushpowers. However, used alone, the 12" units have the perfect sound for a Cobra, with the benefits of a compact and insulated case. I had mine black ceramic coated, and they simply disappear underneath the car.
I have had multiple comments that the exhaust sounds "just like 1965." Can't beat that!
