Default solid cam valve lash 428

Hello, my crower cam recomends .022 in and .024 ex HOT. I set them with engine cold to .024 in .026 ex. think .002 is enough allowance for growth with iron heads? or is there some other reason for hot lash? And I hear that low end torqe is increased when set loose (got plenty low end now) more top end would be nice. Is a typical feeler guage the best way to clearance I have a dial indicator but can't get it to jig up on the head anywhere, know any good tips on (feeling) the valve clearance?

Hmmmm, sounds like I'm going the wrong way! When cold setting you are saying the clearance is actually smaller. I'm glad I haven't reasembled anything yet.

Check out this link. http://www.cranecams.com/mliftfaq.htm

How you adjust them hot vs cold varies based on aluminum or iron head as well as aluminum vs iron block. The rocker arms you run make a difference too. I have a steel block, aluminum heads and the Erson rocker arms and I've found that .008 gives me a perfect .018 hot.

Ed,
Did you remember to block off the oil passeges to the lifters? If you didn't, your engine will eat itself.

My block is a ribbed service replacement 428 the lifter galleys were tapped for 1/4" ipt plugs all I had to do is tap 1/8" ipt threads down below the outer plugs and install 1/8 inch plugs (shorties) and reinstall the outer ones, also this block had been opened to 7/16 at the oil adapter, along with mods to the main and cam bearing oil holes they seem to have been slotted for better alignment, the block has the triple webbing just like the cj and the oil mods look to be factory done or at least by a machine process. I also tapped the rocker shaft oil feed holes and used screw in .090 oil restricters 1/8 ipt. Melling M57B standard volume 428 oil pump. Standard 428 front sump pan and a 427 oil pickup tube with the larger diameter tube and center pickup. 428 scj oil cooler adapter.
