Oil pan clearance
I was just looking at a picture in the gallary by BMalone and my question is how much ground clearance is there in most cobras if the frame height is 6" from the ground. I got my spring issue figured out but just want to make sure that my oil pan is not to low. For those that don't know the only thing I got was the body every mount, bracket, including the frame, I am building. I just want to get it right the first time!! Thanks for the help!

I started with 4 1/2 inches from the ground with my Lone Star Comp with Chevy big block with stock 6 quart pan. Had trouble sealing between pan and timing cover. Retrofit Milodon 8 quart "shallow" sump. Dropped clearance to 3 1/2 inches. Haven't had a bit of trouble with driveways or drain troughs on local streets. Highways no problem either but you will learn to watch for alligators, prairie dogs, and tall snakes real quick. My 3 1/2 inches works just fine.
Glad to hear from another Wyo Cobra owner.

wyocobra, we have to make our own little snake run! My oilpan sits just a shade over an inch and half lower than my frame. Iwas kind of worried about the worms and snakes that I may encounter on our smooth roads. Thanks for the numbers.

too close for comfort!
A buddy of mine has 514 stuffed in his Excalibur with barely 1 1/2" of clearance to the pan.
That seems a little too close for comfort for me but he has yet to have a problem.
I figure it only takes one speed bump or other obstacle 'til ya wish you had another inch.
Hmmm... I think that's what SHE said!

Was that 1 1/2 inches below the frame or below the belt. you kind of lost me there for a second. I will have 4 1/2 inches of ground clearance for the pan with the car wet and if all my figures are correct. I just wasn't sure how low I could go w/o problems.

With a FE engine and Canton Road Race Pan, 3 3/4" to the Ground. That is from the bottom of the pan.

Well, I believe that I will be raising my engine up a tad. I only have 3" clearance from pan to ground. I may just change pans to one with less depth. I have a Kevco that is an inch shallower. That will give me 4" and that should be enough. Thanks for the input guys!

My FFR, road race pan supplied by Levy Racing. Clearance is 4 1/2 inches. Bottom of pan is above the bottom of the frame rails.

I pretty much just try and keep the oil pan from becoming the scrub point on the underside. Anybody interested in a mildly smashed deep sump BBC oil pan? (I don't always learn the easy way)

If your BBC pan looks anything like my slightly scuffed Canton off my Mod than we probably have matching pans. I moved my engine up 1/2 inch and will put my shallower pan on next chance that I get.

My 1974 International scout
(I am restoring it) has a 258 AMC/Jeep motor and a scuff plate welded to the lower portion of the pan. It has a ski shaped leading edge, So far zero problems, no lift kit, and it HAS been used hard in 4 x 4 uses, including limited use dragging small logs as a makeshift skidder, with a choker cable.. no joke.

my oil pan is about four inches from the ground.
Hey, just watch for Corvettes and try not to run them over. LOL

tohmer. don't forget to allow adequate clearance for your bellhousig too...that is the lowest point on my car with lakewood blowproof cover and i have 3-1/2" to the ground from the bottom of the bellhousing. you learn to drive around road kill or it will be cooking under your car while you are driving. also, go over speed bumps at an angle, take them head on/straight and you will leave some grooves in the bump and it will leave some grooves in your housing. bill.

I have a bellhousing that does not have that 1 1/2 " lip on it, that will help me with clearance. My bell is a magnesium and aluminum Modified style and was designed for dirt track racing. Hopefully I will have no problems there. I was worried about scuffing my oilpan so bad that it leaks, just like another one that I have, that really leaks bad.
