No Title or Registration
Hey,
Man im goin crazy. i just bought this car which has no registration or title. I had the vin# ran and the car is fine 100%.
So what the heck do i do to get this thing registered?? If anyone can help man you would be a great help. This is for the state of California aswell. Oh it also has a out of state plate as well.

Since you do not legally own the vehicle, nor can you authenticate that the person before you legally owned the vehicle, I highly suggest that you seek the paid assistance of a licensed attorney!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but... I'll offer some ideas...even though it's "no registration, no title, no car info, no profile"
If the car has an out of state plate, then it was registered at one time. Contact that state's DMV and request duplicate paperwork.
You said you "ran the VIN"... whatever that means. 
Usually VIN's are assigned to kits when they are being inspected or registered the first time... that should help you find the state that originally titled it. |

Yes i did run the VIN NUMBER. The car was already stolen from me since i had purchased it. the police asked for the VIN NUMBER and i gave it to them. Im looking for help, just the steps to take to get it registered. They called me when they found it and i picked it up threw my proof of insurance.

He didn't say he bought a kit, or that he bought a Cobra. Did he?
State of California used to allow application for duplicate titles. I believe you could do a 24 Hr. turnaround. No more!
I am sure some abused it and probably sold cars that did not belong to them. Selling grandmas Buick while she is on the respirator before other family members get their hands on it, is NOT cool.
Beating your husband to the punch just about the time you file for divorce, and selling his Ferrari is NOT cool.
I understand some duplicate titles were issued to cars so freshly stolen that the owner didn't even know the car they left at the airport was stolen.
I WOULD recommend marching to the California DMV and asking them for guidance and doing exactly what they recommend. I am not at all hesitant in giving that advice.

Thank you turk. yes i do plan on doing that, But its thanksgiving and dmv is closed for the next 4 days. Thats why i was hoping someone would let me know what it will involve.

Most likely a long and expensive walk the way things are messed up out here right now. But as Ron ( CW ) said, if it has a license from another state then it should have been registered at some time. Unless of course the license plate was stolen.

You bought it with out of state plates, therefore it must have a title in the state in which it was registered. If you do not have the title in your name, you do not own the car and are in receipt of stolen property even if you did pay for it.

OMG!!! LOL The car is not stolen i know that for a fact. Why cant someone post something useful. Thank you agian turk you're the only one of use so far. AGIAN I KNOW FOR A FACT THE CAR IS NOT STOLEN. IF it was the police would not have returned it to me. The only person it was stolen from was ME!

Real simple... you are on a public forum asking for advice in an area (that you may not be aware of) that is legally sensitive.
You have given no information about the car nor it's history; you have never posted here before.
You are not being stiff-armed for any personal reason... it is just improper to give specific advice on abnormal registration issues.
Try using the "Search" feature here.. you will find a whole evening's worth of interesting reading about California registration.
As has been said, I wish you luck... the current CA situation is dreadful for those even with all their paperwork in order. |

Heres some history on this vehicle. The guy i bought it from owned a shop from nevada. A customer abandoned the car at his shop. He had been driving it around for a while. Here and there. I needed a car for work immed. so i bought it off him with a hand written bill of sale. I do relize this was a mistake becuase look at how hard this is to get help. The insurance company insured it, the police returned it to me, Now i just want the next 4 days till the dmv opens to have a piece of mind on what the hell the steps are to take. The guy who sold it to me moved out of town somewheres. But i do know the car is not stolen. THAT is the history has i have witnessed.

Just because the car has not been reported stolen doesn't mean the previous owner has given up any "rights" to HIS (or her) car. The "mechanic" could place a lien against the car for labor or storage and may well prevail in COURT to gain a legal title.
The question is: What rights do YOU have to file a lien to gain legal title? Does the "Bill of Sale" transfer the "right" to file a lien in court from the mechanic to you? I suspect the mechanic had no "legal" right to dispose of the customers property without going through the proper legal steps in the first place (filing for a "lien"). Had HE done that, HE would have had a title.
Can you imagine a "garage" just up and selling a customers car because they didn't "pay their bill", couldn't contact the owner, etc.? They could SUE for the right to do that, and no doubt would win their case! Thus, they would get a TITLE to the vehicle.
As it stands now the vehicle still belongs to the customer and the "mechanic" has no case because HE abandoned their property. The legally registered owner could demand HIS car back from you.
You definitely NEED an attorney!
