# of 427 cars had 428 Engines ?
How many 427 cobras had the 428 engines ?
The book I have explains there were more 428's that the 427's but, does not say how many. Anyone have the numbers ?
Thanks,
Kev

I don't know if an accurate # is available, since many with 428's were changed to 427s. A friend had a 428 in his that he blew up and had it replaced with a 427 (circa 1969), it was a Street model which I believe all had 428s. I think most of the S/C models had the 428 also. SAAC would be the most logical source for that info. Unless Shelby kept records on what engine was in the cars it's probably a hard one to call.

I agree, most or all S/C cars for the street were 428 engines, I just can't find the numbers. When I bought the engine from Shelbys shop in Vegas, they said no real numbers were taken. I was surprised that they don't even know.

Kevin,
Per the 1997 registry, CSX 3201-CSX3299 came with 428 engines. CSX3101-CSX3200 had 427 engines. Then CSX3300-CSX3360 had 427 engines and I THINK these were the dual four barrels. This is per the last registry published and may not be correct as a lot of cars changed over the years.
Production figures for 427 style cars are given as below!
Street cars= 260
Prototype Competition Roadsters= 2
Production Competetion Roadsters= 19
Semi-Competition Roadsters= 31
Daytona Super Coupe= 1
Chassis only= 3
COB/COX cars=27
Bare stretched chassis (Paramount Film Cars)= 5
Coil Spring Total= 348
These numbers are not set in concrete and could be off as even the registry states they are approximations.

This was posted a while back...
"All the Comp cars were fitted with 427's, as were all the S/C's.
Supposedly, the first 428's began showing up after CSX 3200, with the last 47 cars showing a return to the 427. "
That would mean that at least 110 or so (but probably a bit more) has 428's

I was chastised by a Kirkham on another thread for such statements/questions. I have read the same thing.

SteveHayGood,
No - not even possible as the 429 didn't come out until 1968 - after production of the Cobras stopped.

Kevin,
May I ask if it would be appropriate to raise my voice and yell at you to do a search?
Since you are not a newbie (over 200 posts) and the FAQ section is not yet ready, is it appropriate?
Just having some fun.
Computerworks,
More fodder for FAQing.
