Reverse reading speedometer

Can any body tell me what the purpose of a reverse reading speedometer is . where they were used, and are they hard to get used to . Most people are used to reading from left to right.
Even some history would help?

I purchased my Cobra replica a year ago. I wanted the car to be as "correct" as it could be, so a full set of Smiths gauges with the reverse speedometer was a must. Since these gauges were built in Great Britain, I presume the reverse speedometer was designed for use in right-hand drive cars. It is easy enough
to get used to. Rich

Can't give you the history, but I put one in my car for the same reason as Rich. I really like it and it is very easy to get used to. Most of the time I just drive by the tach anyway.

Just answer me one thing.... Why is it so important to know how fast you're going in reverse??????

I don't believe all the original cobras came with reverse speedometers. It is a nice look though. Only takes one time driving this way to get use to it. Although it does freak out new passengers.
