Undercar exhaust
I have undercar exhaust but don't have any digital photos yet.(just got a digital camera for my birthday the other day so soon I can post some pictures) but here is a car that was for sale here a little while ago, hope the owner doesn't mind me posting pictures of it as it is a beautiful car.
http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...61back-med.JPG hope this helps and if you want to hop on the thruway for a few hours you are more than welcome to come look at mine. Have a good one, Dan |
Hey Whitefe427,
Here's a pic from my gallery. There may be others in there. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...isLeft-med.jpg |
ERA's website shows the set up also. Check in the 289FIA section.

Jim,
Those tailpipes are what mine look like as opposed to the angle cut pipes on the car I posted above. If I am not mistaken the originals have rolled tips like that. By the way your car is gorgeous, one of the nicest on this site I think. I aspire to bring mine into the same league one day. Have a good one, Dan |
I am mre and more starting to like the street cobra look, smooth hood,no roll bar or side exhaust,is these any decent way to do this on an fe motor without using the old cast iron header/manifolds ?
thanks,Tim |
Underslung exhaust car pics in my gallery. Mind you, the steering wheel is in a strange position.
|
Does the exhaust run in the rear wheel well.
Green is definently a great color for a cobra much better then red or silver. But WilfLleek's car has the roll bar on the passenger side. Thank you for the photo's keep them coming any one with a set from the underside rear. Sam:JEKYLHYDE |
Dan,
Thanks for the complement! There are so many great ones on this site - many, IMHO, far better than my own. Sam, On the ERA it runs under the frame rails then over the rear axles and out the back. Ground clearance is a little tighter, but no problems so far - my oil pan actually hangs a little lower than the exhaust. FWIW, the sound is loud enough to set off car alarms with a good blip of the throttle yet not too loud to need ear plugs while cruising. Here is the ERA web page with some excellent photos of the underside and routing: http://www.erareplicas.com/fia/exhaust.htm |
I am building one..
But I just don't have enough room to get it over the rear end.
Is it tacky to run the pipes under it? They will be well hiden and I am planning to make them easily removeable if I have to pull the rear end.%/ Scott S |
Under car exhausts
Dan,
Thanks for the compliment of ERA 561.. It is a beautiful car, especially in BRG paint. That's one of the reasons why I puchased it. Sam and Tim, To answer a few questions about the under car exhausts, this car came with cast iron exhaust manifolds on the 427 S/O that were repaired / welded / painted previously and had small cracks that developed into larger cracks and bigger exhaust leaks..They were replaced with ERA's new system of individual ceramic coated headers that collect into the primary. The ceramic coating lessens the under hood temp..The pipes go thru flowmaster mufflers and come to the rear fender and circle inside the fender between the tire and frame and exit the rear. The chrome exhaust tips are angle cut but the correct original tip is straight and rolled. Because of the movement of independent Jag rear and the ground clearance there could be a problem running the pipes below the Jag half shafts. There is enough room and clearance in the fender for this with an ERA. According to Peter Portante of ERA, this under car exhaust set up is less restrictive or equal to the popular outside exhaust. I can tell you one thing, this old man can carry on a conversation in the car, not have hearing impairment after driving it some distance, not smell of exhaust fumes and not have to worry about third degree burns for myself or passengers when exiting the car. Check with a good tube bender. Don |
SSnake,
May I ask, how big is the collector and pipe exiting the muffler. I was thinking of using individual runners to a 3" oval collector and then going to 3"x2" oval pipe to hug the frame in and out of a Spintech oval muffler. Do you have any photos of the new setup. Beautiful car by the way. Thanks Gary |
SSnake..?
Did that ERA come from Portland OR?

Under Car exhaust
Gary,
Thanks for the compliment on the car. The collector is what I refer to as a cloverleaf type to accomodate the four individual pipes. The diameter of the primary pipe is 2 inch and is flared out to 2.25 to enter the flowmaster muffler. It exits the mufflers at 2.25 diameter. Your oval pipe may work. ERA recommended the 2 inch diameter. In my case, I chose not to increase the diameter very much in keeping with the look of the original car, ground clearance and inside fender clearance. I'm confident that there is horsepower to gain with the larger pipes but I simply left it alone..I did notice scrapes on the bottom of the mufflers so I'm glad I did. I don't have any pic's of the exhaust set up but in the archives of this site there are some pics of the system in it's entirety. Check with Peter @ ERA about the restrictive nature of this along with the diameters. Scott S. Yes, the car was from Portland and now happily resides in a Dallas suburb in the great state of Texas. Don |
I got the chance to look it over several times, you are one lucky guy!
The best I have seen, Scott S |
Lucky guy
Scott,
Thanks for the kind words.. The car was one that I wanted since I was a teenager. BRG was a standard color on the original but you don't see a BRG street 427 very often and that was what appealed to me. With the 427 s/o, 2x4, and other little goodies, it has, as they say in RR terms, adequate power. This was the third ERA 427 that was built by a gentlemen in VA. He did a fantastic job and the owners who had it before myself took pretty good care of it. I simply was the benefactor of their knowledge, care and appreciation of the car. Don |
re: undercar exhaust
My Superformance Roadster has undercar exhausts. See my gallery ("SP1410") and there is a photo of the rear. I hope this is helpful.
|
I have a phantom or ghosted drawing in my gallery with the undercar exhaust routing shown quite well, If you need a better copy let me know and I'll e-mail one. I was wondering if the T-bolt manifolds would be a good start for a system like that or if they are too rearward exiting.
Thanks for the thread and resources it's the way I'm going too. |
Chuck Brandt posted a great picture of an undercar exaust to an old thread. I've tried to post the picture with no luck.
The thread is titled 'Who has built a street version'. The pics are on the last page and are well worth the hassle of looking it up. Chuck also has a great build page, check it out, chuckbrandt dot com. -John |
