Default throw out bearing and valve cover color

hey guys
see if anyone can help here. two questions. first, can anyone guess at what might be making a rattling noise in the clutch assembly. sounds like its coming from the throw out bearing. this only occurs when the transmission is in nuetral. this is a hydraulic system, not mechanical. when shifting and in gear there is no noise. all are new parts. second, does anyone know the correct color for the valve covers on the fia 289 race engines?

Paul - it might just be rattle from the gearbox itself - try pushing your tickover up a tad to smooth it out and see what happens.

One way to determine if it is your throwout bearing is easy - if the noise stops as soon as you put light pressure on the clutch pedal (but not enough to disengage the clutch), it is coming from the throwout bearing. If the noise keeps on until you have completely disengaged the clutch ( and therefore there is no drive to the 'box), then it is from the box itself, and may not necessarily indicate a problem.

Argent silver. It is or was available from Ford in a spray can.
RE the T/O bearing, it could be one of severeal things. May have had it improperly adjusted and "cooked" the grease out of it so it is now "dry".

thanks for the reply guys. it may be a while before my son will have time to check things out, but he's hoping that he doesn't have to remove the tranny. i'll check on the paint. the only pictures i could find for paint color were vintage shots and the color looked gray. thanks again.
