One of the neatest ideas I have see in garage lights was the placement of fluroscent fixtures into the side walls.
If your garage is not drywalled yet, you could install 4 (two on each side) fixtures with 4 bulbs in each at about 2 feet of the floor.
Since they are recessed into the walls they don't take up any space but provide great illumination for working on the car and cleaning the car etc.

Nothing but the best!
I guess I should plug the source from which I lifted the pic: www.autotrend.com, in case anyone wants that poster hanging in their garage.

Not off the subject
Dangerous Doug
Now thats not off the subject at all.
I took a look at Mike's garage and found the 360 degree key and took a panoramic of his garage - turned it all around. Mustangs and engines in every corner.
I found the panoramic key again - but hell I could not turn that girl around on your Post.
Dangerous Doug.....
Could you spin her 180 degrees and Post again. Out of interest of course
Cheers
Bernie

Doug, I use 3, 8 foot fluroscents in a small garage and it works great. I think Turk's idea of in the wall is really good. You don't need a large garage for a lift.

I may not need a big garage for a lift (a big wallet, yes, and apparently, a big hole in the garage floor, too), but I better get the Cobra first, or I'll really look silly working on my son's tricycle on a lift.
I'd post more pictures of "Julia Ann" but I think I'm already taking chances with the moderator. Forget about flipping the image 180 degrees, I want her phone number!

Omphalosk..sis ??
Hey Doug - I'm afraid to ask.. "what's Omphaloskepsis"?
We have been watching one of those 'Batchelor' programs over here in Australia. You know the one where the girl gets down to the last couple of guys.
Tells us she loves them both and then dumps one.
Well we have just had one of those shows in from England with a girl called Miriam. Miriam has a secret and the guys will not be happy.
Miriam appears to be a him???
Guess thats why I asked to spin the photo 180 degrees.
No really it was for the appreciation of art.
Keep "Posting" those garage photos. I already have two new ideas. Miss February on the side wall and Miss September above the tool chest.
Really, my garage looks pretty average (gallery) when you compare..
Cheers
Bernie

Dream Garage
My wife and sold our house in the country and bought an old Studebaker dealership in town.
http://www.jsonline.com/news/wauk/nov02/93020.asp
We razed the roof and erected a spancrete deck on which we built our residence.
The main floor has a 1200 sq ft glassed in showroom, a parts room that we converted to my office. 5000 sq ft of shop space complete with 2 wash bays, a lift and body shop.
Our priority is to complete the residence and get moved in by the end of the month.
Then I can concentrate on finishing the "shop" and get back to playing with cars!
Watch for it on HGTV "Building Character"

Bernie: "omphaloskepsis - the act of contemplating one's own navel as a means of meditation". I've pretty much mastered contemplating my own navel, so now I'm focusing on contemplating the navels of svelte females in low-riser pants...
On the "she's a he" bachelor reality show: Oh, s***, are those boys in for a surprise. I'll bet they wished that she, er, ah, HE wore low-riser pants so they could determine if she, I mean, HE was packing anything. (Is that a pistol in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?)
Ohekk: Sounds like a pretty cool project. What sort of trick features are you planning for your shop?

Nothing trick...just plenty of room to work!
I tried building cars in a 2 car garage and it was never enough room.
Also tried a barn and the creatures were too bothersome.
My last shop was 2400sq ft and I ran out of room there too.
This is my last chance at doing it right.

ohekk,
I read the article you had posted about you and the wife moving from the country to the loft/shop. Pretty interesting read, and it provides an intereting perspective on living arrangements outside of my home turf. Good idea on getting closer to restaurants and such.
My wife and I moved from Silicon Valley proper (actually, Menlo Park, which really is quite nice) to a more country environment. Between our two incomes, our $500k house purchase price wouldn't net us anything that we wanted to live in on the Penninsula (upper Silicon Valley, on the SF side of the Bay) so we went to a sleepy little town just SW of Silicon Valley called Scotts Valley. Bought a reasonably large house on a hill with nice views and 1.5 acres, and have watched it skyrocket in value over the last four years. Restaurants are limited, but getting better, so I certainly understand the desire to have good food nearby, not to mention the hardware store, the auto parts store, the grocery store...
My shop is a two car, but it's really deep, allowing me to actually have shop space even with two cars parked (but not enough space to work on a third car).
Be sure to post some pictures of your project, finished or otherwise.
Dangerous Doug

Garage Mahal continues...
Installed six recessed lights in the main part of the garage, with four more smaller recessed lights directly above the 16' long work bench. The lighting is p-e-r-f-e-c-t. Nice muted lighting for showing off a (as of yet unpurchased) Cobra, with plenty of lighting over the workbench where I'll need it. I'm going to add a fluorescent retractable drop light in the center of the garage for those hard-to-see places.
