Titling a homemade chassis
I have embarked on the 'journey' to become a Cobra owner after a lifetime of being completely possessed with the vehicle.
However, the 'journey' has gotten quite interesting. A friend of mine purchased a cobra body in the 80's and never did anything with it. I began playing with Corvettes a few years ago and accumulated some parts to a Corvette C4 IRS suspension (less the frame and title). After putting together a few tradesman along the way to reconstruct a 1970 Camaro SS, I had this "outlandish' idea to fabricate my own chassis for the Cobra body using the components from the Corvette parts.
Well, long story short I find myself in a very interesting predictament. I essentially have a lawyer friend of mine ready to submit all the required paperwork to the NHTSA so that I can become registered as a 'vehicle manufacturer' so that I can have the chassis I will build have a "Manufacturers Statement of Origin".
I guess my state (Maine) doesn't necessarily acknowledge "homebuilt chassis" and requires a MSO for that major component.
Talk about unitended consequences. Of course I could purchase a chassis with an MSO from someone, I suppose, but I have all these components and a team of bloaks that do unreal work.
Does anyone have a similar experience?
