Default Carb dry for cold starts

Hi guys!
I'm running a Carter HP electric fuel pump (100gph@7psi) with a Summit fuel regulator (4.5 to 9 psi) pumped into a Edelbrock 750 carb.
The problem I'm having with this set-up is there is not enough fuel in the carb for a couple of squirts for cold start-up. I added a bypass switch to the pump to fill the carb before starting. This is a pain! The regulator is adjusted down to minimum flow. If I turn it up the carb will flood out. I have adjusted the floats to Edelbrock specs. What is causing the carb to run dry? The engine (302) runs great at idle and down the road.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

Whitey,
This is only me you understand, but I have never had any luck getting a Carter AFB/Edelbrock carb to work right every where. If were me, I'd change out to a Demon or Holly. JMHO

Eddy and Carter carbs develope a crack in the body and will let the fuel evaporate. Not much you can do about it.

Whitey,

With all due respect ditch the carb. I ran a Super Stock Duster with a Carter. What a pain !!! I'm surprised you're running such a big (750) carb with that 302.

The carb should never get dry while sitting. If it is, it's leaking somewhere. Fix the leak.

The Holley 1850, 600 CFM VS is a nice, and relatively inexpensive carb for a mild 302.

Your all correct, the Eddyjunk carbs heat fracture very quickly and the fuel just runs into the engine and drains the bowls.

Edelbrock should be charged with consumer fraud on that 750, it's the worst carb ever built.

Go to google and search

Thanks guys,

You just answered a question that a friend of mine has been fighting for a year now. I use Holly carbs and he has an Edelbrock on his 302 and he can never get it to start easy after it sets for a day or so. We have looked for any signs of leaks on the intake and never found any.

whitey94 Whitey you should be able to run 5.5 psi to that carb and not have the float being knocked off the seat. I would replace the float and seat. Are you sure that there is not some small piece of crap caught in the sealing area? I would call Good old Vic and ask him if he stands behind his name? Explain the problem and see what he can do to fix the problem. You should have your fuel pump turn on for 3-5 second than go off. This will fill the bowls in your carb. Get an pressure switch to a relay to turn the pump back on when oil pressure is passed 10psi. I would try the needle and seat first. 4.5 psi is nothing for fuel pressure. If Vic doesn't help, Look at a proform, barry grant, demon or one of the others, even a holley 600 dual feed dual pump. Save the carb and go to one of the NHRA races and show them what a wonderful carb they make and the problems they are having. This always helps sales . Try the nice way first. E-mail back if the seat and float don't fix it. I would recomend a carb heat shield between the carb and the manifold. Wrap the fuel lines in insulated covers to keep the fuel cooler. When the engine is hot and you turn off the motor, do you lift the hood to help get the heat out of the motor area. Add a 1/2" spacer between the carb and manifold this will also help with the heat not transfering to the carb. Good luck Rick Lake
