Default One piece Pin drive Hubs?

I would like to gather information on what type of peg drive system one piece hubs have, eg do they use press in wheel studs like most hubs or are they different?

Maybe they have a all in one peg that has a thread and either locates on shank or a machined shoulder, this would mean room for a nut on the rear!

Ant, The latter sounds about right. Looks like the pin shoulder passes through the wheel flange, then rotor and has a nut on holding all in place.

Default AMP

Morris,

I visited AMP and purchased some stainless steel knockoffs when I was in the US last year!

I have phoned him etc etc etc to make an order and nothing seems to happen, I wonder if he cant be bothered with overseas orders or something!

At this stage I am looking at going with a larger 31spline CV with my T/bird IRS, so if I did purchase AMP rear hubs I would have to get hime to leave the spline broaching, or give him details, and once again he doesnt seem interested, and the other issue is wheels, and I may look at PSE knock off 17", it wont be several months before I know exactly backspacing/offset etc. I dont want to bother with 15" wheels with this car, as I had two sets of Trigos with my last car, they look great, but I am going for 17" so I can get a better range tires and generally improved performance!

Having said all that I have a very good engineer that does all that and more, and he can custom hubs for me, and he is only 1 mile from my home, so I can visit him and hopefully reduced communication problems!

Hi there from Europe,
you can sent Gerry from Hawkcars a mail, he has the six -pin unit front and rear on stock for Jaguar axels. His e-mail is gerry@hawkcars.co.uk

If Amp's process is anything like ours, the spline broach must be done mid-way in the machining process so that the final bearing mounting surface dimensions can be accurately maintained. It's not practical for us to do a single custom hub but a good machinist probably can.

Default One piece Pin drive hubs?

Fritz,

Thanks but I am only using Jaguar front hubs, and Thunderbird IRS rears!

strictlypersonal,

The machinist mentioned if I wanted to heat treat 4340 and it is not totally necessary but this could be done before the final machining is done. I guess what you are getting at is maybe similar, the spline broaching is done midway in the process, because it may distort the final result if the bearing surfaces were already done!!!
How are your pin drives held in do they have a nut on the rear of hub, and is it just the shank that locates or is there a shoulder?

Ant,

We use the Jag system where the bearings are sandwiched in between the hub and the stub axle. (and shimmed for bearing clearance).

Default Pin drive hubs

strictlypersonl,

Thank you, I am interesting in researching how the pins are made, and if they have a shoulder to locate them as well as maybe the shank, and nut/washer to hold the hat on rear of hub?

It would be good to find a supplier of pin drives, I suppose my machinist can make em up, but they wont be cheap!

All the pins for the Cobra that I've seen have a 3/8"-24 thread and a 1/2" body. The hubs are threaded to match and a backup nut is usually used on the backside of the hub. Trigo has reasonably priced pins.

What hubs are you using?

Default One piece Pin drive Hubs?

Here is a small breakdown of the project!

I am using Jaguar SIII uprights/hubs on the front, and Ford Thunderbird independent rear suspension, and will end up with custom brakes all round. I have a car being built in the UK at the moment Ram SC (Realm Engineering) Cobra which is setup for single shock/spring Jaguar IRS with braced suspension arm etc, but that setup will be changed for T/bird IRS, so I have a big job doing the numbers etc to fabricate double wishbone IRS, but I think its worth it for the weight and plus I have a nice Ford IRS alloy race setup diff unit/uprights etc in the shed.
Another issue is with the Reynard designed space frame chassis suspension, the front track is wider than normal, so I couldn't use Trigos or Vintage wheels. Custom 17" x10, 17" x 12" will probably be used, NZ made or Compomotive!

Regarding hubs, splines etc etc, I am also looking at Drivetrain.com they have these very HD 31 spline CV joints etc and 300m axles that fit the standard inner plunge CV, and if you want to retain your standard spline hub they have 4340 CV joint, but they make a larger splined wheel bearing hub to suit 31 spline, so this makes things more complicated as everything goes hand in hand, but I am starting to think adapters might be the way to go again, as on the front as you know the rotor goes on the inside of the hub, and on the rear I make the wishbones to suit a brake hat either on the inside of the hub (not much room) or outside, but then that could mean two sandwich plates behind the wheel (not that keen)!

I'll stop now, isn't car design fun!
