I'd love to see those articles.............seriously. I did see one C&D or R&T review in the last year that wasn't very flattering overall, but am not aware of others. I think the Cobra finished last in a 5-6 car comparo.
The C&D article is on the FFR website somewhere and yes, it did come in pretty low on the overall vote. But that took into account things like comfort, weartherproofness (??) and other subjective things. It won almost all the performance tests, some by a very large margin. It was set up for some serious autocross with 17s but was still bested in some of the handling tests by the Elise and a Super 7/Caterham thing.
FFR will send you the DVD free, the racing vids really are great.
My point was about Cobras as originally set up. No doubt, you can build something that looks like a Cobra with modern technology, modern low profile tires, etc., that will do very well on the track. I don't care for the 17" low-profile look on my Cobra, but I don't want to race it either. I like it for a different reason.
Personal preferences are all that matter.........
Agreed, I'm building a very traditional looking car too. I intend to use it for pleasure, not the track or street racing and don't care if I can blow off ZO6s. I also don't expect a car, or even a 'modern' version of it to keep up with the state of the art 40 years later. That the Cobra can even come close is simply a testament to a great idea and the fact that some people just won't let that idea go and keep 'tweaking' it.

I like Bill's explanation of BHP better than mine (NET vs. GROSS). He's right, it isn't the same as a car being hooked up to a RWHP dyno......but the numbers are much more honest than what the ratings were in the 60's.
Clay: I guess you could say that we were both right / and wrong. .........Only, you were more wrong than I was.

You have the engine running again? Haven't been following the build thread.
Glad the Holley books are of use to you. Me I'm extremely happy with the new "pos" Edlebrock I installed after the months of expense and "torture" I had with my Holley. Never have had any luck with Holleys as touted as they are in automotive circles.

Clay: Ok, I stand corrected. I took your comments as an indication that you thought the HP numbers were at the flywheel (as listed in the 60's). My bad.
Getting back to the Z06.............Yesterday I checked with our local Chebby dealer and asked what the wait was on getting into a new Z06. He said "why wait? I have one on the lot now!" I got excited and went out to take a look only to be disapointed when seeing it was a C5 model. He then said "Oh........you mean a BRAND new one.....".
He had no idea when they would be getting them in but he did say that they already had a waiting list. I told him I saw one down in Florida and all of a sudden HE had more questions for ME than I had for him.

...I did have some bad thoughts about buying an Edelbrock carb before I started making some progress on those "pos" Holleys!

Terry, truth is, I wasn't sure what numbers GM was quoting either. Since they don't start building the new Z06 until the summer, the earliest production cars will be available in the fall of 05. Dealers are already reported to have long lists.

For what it's worth, I own a 2003 Z06 and a 427 ERA. In a straight line its no contest , all Cobra. In the corners, its all Z06. Watch out for the C6 Z06, they will also have 427's in them.

2006 Z06 Availability
From a previous posting I made. Confirmed by Ken Fichtner, owner of the dealership:
When will the Z06 be available in dealerships?
The Z06 model will be available in the fourth quarter of 2005 as a 2006 model.
When is the start of production for the Z06?
Production is scheduled to begin on July 25, 2005.
When will Fichtner Chevrolet know how many Z06s they can order?
Dealer allocation will be communicated to us in May of 2005.
How will Fichtner Chevrolet price units?
We will price the new Z06 at a price equal to MSRP plus $0 for dealer prep, handling, documentation, market adjustment, etc.
How many requests for Z06s has Fichtner Chevrolet received?
To date (4/1/05) I have made promises to 5 customers whose requests were made first. These requests were made in writing up to 2 years ago. We have over 500 requests at present. When we know the pricing and the quantity that we will have available to sell, we will email everyone. It is possible that one or more of the first 5 on our list will not place an order when it is time to place an order. At that time we will offer any unsold allocations to customers in the order in which their written requests were made to us.
