one more question on electric fuel pumps
Ok after looking a litle harder now i know why the PO had an electric fule pump installed...he relocated the oil filter so its away from the header. so a mechanical pump is out of the question till i reroute it later. I bought another holly electric pump. this one has a regulator, where as the one that was on the car did not...how important is this regulator? Should i use it or not? these pumps are pretty much the same, Holly blue electric. it came with a standard regulator.
thanks, i can honestly say im learning alot from here...

I would mount the fuel pump (electric as close to the fuel tank as possible . personaly I prefer 2 in series but I am prone to overkill . Use the regulator and install as close to the intake as you can , good luck, jerry

The regulator will help insure you don't put too much pressure on the carb and overrun the carb and force gas in when not needed.

Scott,
You will need the supplied regulator with the blue pump.
I imagine it had the red pump,it doesn't need one.
red - 7 psi & 97 gph
blue - 14 psi & 110 gph.
You'll flood the carb and engine compartment without the reg..
Set it 6 - 7 psi

and would that cause a flooding condition?...when the old pump did work i used to get a run on when shutting down, and black smoke poofing out of the pipes under load. also used to get bogging when i booted on it.....wondering if that was one of my gremlins i have...

I put a fuel pressure regulator on and a guage . that way you can adjust the fuel pressure and keep it constant and within the recommended specs of your carb again the 2 pumps can be considered overkill untill one goes out, jerry

Highly recommend you use the regulator
My Holley electric fuel pump was putting out 14 psi which was 2 x the needed pressure, causing rich running and all kinds of other problems.. it came that way on my "turnkey" and when I rebuilt the engine (a looong story) I wisely added a fuel regulator and trimmed the pressure down to about 7 lbs. That was then, carb, this is now:
I'm changing over to EFI right now and it's going to be a big relief.. I hate carbs, erspecially in a car that can pull 1.1 gs and as a result flooded (overspill) on every hard corner or u-turn I took!

Also I would recomend after you previous problems if your running a holley you probably should repace the power valves and check for dirt in the needle and seat

Also, if your engine was running rich because of excess fuel pump pressure, you should probably change your oil before you run it much. Some of the fuel could have gotten past the rings and into the oil.

That's a bad choice for pumps on a street driven vehicle with or without a regulator. If you put any amount of miles on the car the pump will not last long. You need a fuel return back to your tank to prevent pump from dead-heading which heats up the fuel and burns up the motor on the pump. These pumps are also very noisy. I would go with a BG hot rod pump with a fuel returning regulator. You will have to run another line back to the tank. Either this or go with a street mechanical pump. -Bob

If you are having carb problems you may want to talk to Don Gould (cuda66273 here) and get a carb and the proper pump all at once. The Edelbrock are OK for stock and slightly warmed over engine. They also have a tendency to develop a crack in the bowl and leak. This will also cause a hard starting problem if you had a mechanical pump as you have to crank the engine to fill the bowl back up. Not as big a deal with the electric fuel pump. They may have the cracking fixed on the new carbs by now too.

id be more than happy to go back to a mechanical pump but now im concerned about the oil filter and the header....the PO put an adapter so it sticks forward of the motor so it will be away from the header , which gets in the way of the placement of the mechanical fuel pump...i should stress this car is just for cruising around and going to work with it once in a while....car shows, cruise nights etc etc....again this is a Boss351

Holley blue pump has a heavier bypass spring than the red. Don't reckon there is any difference otherwise. You can change the spring if you don't want to run the reg.

Ok i have just about had it...lol....i had gotten the Blue pump before i just read its a bad choice....the good news is the car now fires..bad news is it runs like crap...I am running a regulator on it and im getting between 6-7 PSI, I have tried to time the car..it seems like its where it needs to be....but its running rough and when i apply throttle it coughs and black smoke pumps out the pipes....Im using the MSD pro billet ready to run dist with MSD coil...edelbrock performer 351 intake with the matching carb 750cfm. no choke. I think the carb is all messed up but i really dont have the tools or the time to mess with all that...especialy with the work load the army is giving me...I need to find a facility in the savannah GA area that is reputable that can just go through this car...and get this cobra running right!.....I can do minor stuff but im not equiped for all this....
