tremec tko oil leak
I have been chasing an oil leak at speedo cable connection at trans. trans is a tko 5 speed with autometer gauges. I have replaced o-ring seal on speedo cable drive gear at trans. This has slowed leak down to a couple of drips. Also have noticed trans oil leaking inside of vehicle onto carpet just below speedometer gauge. Has anyone else experienced this problem on a BACKDRAFT. I own #143. Cashburn are you out there?

Got the same tranny, same cable, same cobra manufacturer, same leak. I am suspecting it is the cable assembly, just have not had the time to confirm. DON |

In my case it was not the O-ring. It is the poor crimp of the cable end to the cable housing. It is a common problem. Usually fixed by cleaning and using an RTV sealer to inhibit fluid leaking via the boundary between the fitting and the outer surface of the cable jacket.

I have a Tremec 3550 (not a TKO). If the cable is the same (don't know if it is), and you see trans fluid on it near the trans, that's where the leak is. When I bought my car last fall I had a minor leak there. It is relatively easy fix. I removed the cable from the car entirely. Unscrewed it from the back of the speedo (don't know if your Backdraft has the same kind of speedo connection as my Superformance). The connection at the trans is obvious and easy. After backing of the bolt that holds it in, pull the cable out. Clean the cable real good with brake cleaner. The leak is probably not the o-ring, but if you suspect it, go to NAPA with the cable and pick one out of their box of o-rings that fits.
Reinstall the cable, then put RTV sealer around the metal crimp at the end of the cable. That is where my leak was. Let it cure for a day. Drive the car and check for leaks. Mine was gone. This does not answer your leak at the speedo. Beats me. Haven't had that yet. Jack |
Why would there be trans fluid at the speedo???? Sounds like a ventilation problem on the trans. When it heats up the air pressure has to go somewhere.

I think mine was just due to splashing and sloshing. I have never seen any transmission fluid exit the speedometer end. I don't know how the transmission is vented, but clearly as it heats up in use the fluids and vapors will grow in volume somewhat.

This is an old thread I started about 2 years ago. Sorry I did'nt chime in sooner. Chilibit is right about the RTV fix, I did this on my cable 2 years ago and I have'nt had a problem since. As far as the fluid dripping off the back of the speedo, the fluid was actually wicking up the cable

This is great! I've been wanting to tackle this project for awhile. I have a bdr #299 same leaks. I cant seem to fix the leak at the guage. I have smiths as well and tried plumbers tape and it still didn't work. I glade the cable at the tranny sounds pretty simple to dismantle with no mess. Thanks
