Canton Oil Cooler Thermostat

I have a question on oil cooler thermostats, the canton unit in particular. Does this unit allow a small volume of oil to circulate to the cooler at all times and then only allow full flow when it opens. I'm guessing this is what happens to keep air out of the system and keep the cooler and it's lines fully charged with oil at all times. Can someone confirm this or tell me how it actually works.

That's what I was told some months ago when I asked a similar question. Some oil bypasses the thermostat.

I don't know if some bypasses the thermostat or not, but if it didn't, once you got oil to the cooler (and the air out), wouldn't it stay full of oil? Obviously you'd want to be easy on the motor during the first warm-up. Good question.

If anyone is interested I got the answer from Canton. Their thermostat is designed so that oil can alwys flow to the cooler. Because the cooler offers more resistance than the thermostat the majority of the oil flows through the thermostat back to the engine until it reaches temperature. At that time the thermostat will block oil from going straight back to the engine and force it to go through the cooler.
